ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Grasshoppers were one of the most influential and melodic rock / pop bands on the New York City Scene in the mid 90's. Each member brought their own unique musical ability, unsurpassed by their peers. This is the first album made by "The Grasshopers" entitled "The Grasshoppers". It includes the all out rocker "Down The Slide", the ultra Beatle melodic Pop "Crosstown Bus", the ecologically minded "Taking It Upon Yourself" and the enigmatic rocker "Sunday Suprise". All ripe with harmonies and catchy guitar riffs it is truly a calliope of pop sounds. Early lineup includes Marco Joachim (Guitar, Piano Lead Vocal), Jason Appleton (Guitars and Lead vocals), Dave Hamburger on Bass and Richard Pagano on drums.

Marco, Jason, and David penned the songs for their debut self-titled CD, released on Smile Records. After the release of their first album, drummer Rich Pagano left the band to pursue a producing career that included the Grasshoppers second album “American Van”. Rich was replaced by long time New York rock scene staple Chris Wilford. The Grasshoppers second album will be re-released shortly and is already a collector’s item having been almost impossible to find for years. "American Van” is another concept album about a band with a remote recording unit in their van. All the songs were recorded while touring across America. The album featured the Grasshoppers trademark sound, reminiscent of the Beatles and The Band.

The Grasshoppers rigorous touring schedule and original brand of '70s influenced rock earned them a devoted following and the attention of major record labels. They were one the first rock groups to write and perform Jingles as a band, performing on such well known campaigns as Diet Coke, 7 Up, Toyota, Tropicana and Long John Silver’s among others. Subsequently they were featured in an article about rock and roll jingles in New York Magazine (“Jingle All The Way” by Chris Norris, Dec 16 1996).

Many luminaries of the business could be seen catching Hopper’ shows, from Paul McCartney to Joan Osborne, Jeff Buckley and even the world famous classical conductor Seji Ozowa. While opening for Ritchie Havens at the 1994 Woodstock reunion in Bethel NY, The Grashoppers stunned the audience with an electrifying, thunderously loud, powerful performance. The bands closing numbers united the crowd of thousands, bringing them to their feet as they swayed to the Hoppers’ classic rock anthems. Sadly, some great footage was shot of the show, only to be stolen by a roadie some years later. Who knows, maybe someday it will turn up on YouTube!
