Songs From the Shallow Waters

by Greg Dale

With the voice of a rabble rousing street preacher and the words of a poet nursing a wound with duct tape, Greg Dale has come to set it down. His first solo album, Songs From the Shallow Waters, has a feel and sound all its own, recalling the honest roughness of young Bruce Springsteen, the plaintive longing of Neil Young and the boot-thumping roots rock of the Band. Recorded in Berkeley, California with Noah Landis of Neurosis, the songs are filled with hope, strife and little pieces of sage advice, like a throw back to Poor Richard’s Almanack. Songs with a bite and a Band-Aid.

Album Notes
" Behind the stars... i will show you my scars "

Formerly singer and lead guitarist of Sorrow Town Choir, an
underground band based in San Francisco, and the true
front man of Midnight Riders, the animated southern rock
zombie band in the multi-million selling video game Left
For Dead II, Greg has drawn from a deeper source for these
songs. They were written in the pale light of early morning,
bent over his acoustic guitar with freight trains rumbling
outside the windows of his reclaimed warehouse, a
sanctuary in the middle of industry. A newly found focus
finds him writing the best songs of his career. Greg Dale is
clear eyed and strong, singing out the long night’s end.

" Don’t take much to make me want what I don’t have and I
don’t have much need for the things that I do… "

Songs From the Shallow Waters is recorded in spare and
intimate style-- voice and guitar captured in performance,
building to more dense, eclectic orchestrations enriched by
talented local musicians on piano, guitars, and percussion.
The song ‘see how she glows’ stands out as a potential
single, while ‘ottawa hills’ with its haunting pedal steel will
appeal to broader New Folk and Alt-Country audiences.
Greg has been writing and playing for the past twenty
years, opening for acts as diverse as Rocco de Luca and Dale
Watson. This will become the album you turn to at the end
of your own long night, when you are alone and wondering
what the new day will bring. His songs will reach you, if you
let them in.

Outstanding, surprising, real
If you have followed Greg Dale's music over the years (decades), you might be surprised and delighted by this new work. This solo album is different from Sorrow Town Choir. It’s incredibly layered but still has the raw passion and distinctive voice that you’ll recognize immediately. The impressive soundscapes here point to a long, considered time writing and crafting (and collaborating with other very talented musicians) that has paid off in rich details that emerge after listening a few times. The sound quality is excellent. On the whole, these songs show a maturing artist whose vision encompasses love and loss, although there’s a playfulness to some pieces that are pure Greg, that make you want to get up and dance or laugh out loud. Which is nice because some of these beautiful, sad songs will make you want to cry. But in a good way, a way that you need to feel. Really. You should get this.
