ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus praises the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old – nova et vetera. Having published our first CD “Tempus Adventus”, as a part of a project called “In illo Tempore – the music in Slovak churches before 1600” this time we decided to showcase the New that we have in our “storeroom”. This CD is based on the repertoire, prepared for our concert in the program of the “Ars Nova Cassoviae” Festival in 2008. With the preparation of this concert we have also started cooperating with the conductor Jan Mikušek.
This recording interweaves the thread of “old Gregorian chant” into the sacred music production of the contemporary authors. This thread is present in different forms. Apart from three original antiphons, it appears in some pieces in the form of inspiration and, in others, in actual citation. In yet others it appears in some combination of the ancient plain chant with the modern vocal polyphony.
The three falsobordones of this album (4, 7, 18) were composed at our impetus. The oldest one was composed by Renāte Stivriņa on the occasion of the aforementioned 2008 concert. The next two were produced especially for this CD. Falsobordone is one of the techniques which is used to present psalms during the Liturgy of the Hours, usually by alternating the plain chant and the vocal polyphony verses. This style started to be used in the 15th century (along with other forms) and was still in use in the 18th century. This style of music is widely used by our choir in the Košice Cathedral apart from other also for practical reasons and inspired our composers to arrange contemporary falsobordones.
In all three cases the authors created several “musical patterns” which can be applied in the individual psalm verses. The anticipated scheme in each piece is based on the choice of two alternating models.
The birth of Psalmus 85 by Mirko Krajči was also at our impetus. Although he did not create falsobordone, he was inspired by it in creating the piece. In view of the short amount of time that we had for recording it, its inclusion on the CD was seriously threatened. However, we are extremely glad that the threat was overcome and has been included. The unison parts of the antiphons and psalms used come from the Gregorian repertoire (8th–10th century). This choice was made in order to correspond in text with other compositions in this album. Our source was Graduale Simplex.
The album received a great review on the Czech radio station Vltava and we have received a lot of good feedback from the composers themselves.
