Album Notes
"Every once in a while, you come across an album that makes you sit up straight and take notice. Old Mr.Mackle Hackle is one of those unique albums. Gunnar Madsen absolutely shines on his debut children's album. As a founding member of the singing group The Bobs, Madsen is no stranger to cutting edge musical presentation. Applying his experience and versatility to this production for young people allows him to offer intelligent, humorous, imaginative, quirky and clever music that kids and parents can enjoy together."
(Deborah Moore,Tribune Media Services)

"With Old Mr.Mackle Hackle, Gunnar Madsen offers up some of the freshest, funniest, and most inventive fare in the ever expanding crop of children's music. "Summertime Is Here" is a bluesy romp in celebration of that venerable season and "Born to Chew (We Eat Meat)" is a carnivorous dinosaur spoof on '50s rock.
"Chicken Road" is a talking country blues that'll leave listeners in stitches as Madsen tells of chicken lipstick, chicken donuts, chickens playing guitars, and just about every other brand of rooster and hen.
Horns and squawky keys chronicle the "Elephant Traffic Jam," "Selling Lemonade" is a straight-up folk tune begging for campfire sing-alongs, and the rhyming title track bounces and boings away, lodging itself firmly into one's noggin.
Fleshed out with rootsy and faux-classical instrumentation, Madsen's lyrics are smart, sassy, and right on target, operating on multiple levels, pleasing both adult and juvenile audiences. Winning and witty!"

The students ask for it.
My students ask for it to work to. They love it!

Chicken lover's dream
I keep a small flock of chickens and first stumbled across the lyrics for Chicken Road and Old Mr. Mackle Hackle while doing a chicken keyword search on Google. What a lucky break! I bought copies to send as birthday presents to my 6- and 7-year-old nieces, but I'm not sure they can ever possibly love it as much as this middle-aged chicken aficionado does. Mr. Mackle Hackle can make any bad day better.

A unique and quirky blast of melody, wit, beat, rhyme, & humour.
We've been taking music out of the library on a weekly basis, buying music, borrowing music....and I used to host a radio show, so we thought we had children's music covered. Suddenly we discovered Old Mr. Mackle Hackle, and our 2 and 4 year old need it now as a constant companion in the car whenever driving around. What's amazing about this CD is it's ability to bring 12 absolutely completely different styles of song together with quality, melody, and musicality, while keeping it fresh for kids and adults, time after time. My personal favourite is Flying, Flying, which is just a gorgeous song that keeps me hearing it far after it's over. Thanks to Gunner for the insight and innovation that were behind this recording.

wonderfully entertaining
This is one of those rare CDs where the music is as enjoyable for adults as for younger listeners. Great melodies, great lyrics and a variety of styles make this a true musical gem.

My class loves it!
This CD is great! I ordered it for the dinosaur songs because we are doing a Dinosaur unit. My grade 2 students ask if we can turn it on every chance they get! We must listen to the CD 4 times a day...!

Kickin' rhythms!
The words are fun, the music is catchy, and the rhythms will make any kid hop around and wave happily to the adoring adults looking on.

love this upbeat, creative and musically wonderful CD.
The songs get stuck in your head. The images are so original and the music so catchy. I wish I had had these songs when I was young. They're such fun!

Good for parents, TOO!
I love Mr. Hackle Mackel, especially the Elephant Song--my kids just love it, and I can tolerate it very well too! It is truely the best kids' CD I have ever listened too--really! (I borrowed it from a friend, and took me awhile to track it down, and glad I found it again...) Julie

Fabulous for older kids too!
This is a great CD for kids who are getting beyond the preschool music stage. As much as we loved Raffi, my four-year-old daughter was ready for music that is more complex. In the car between daycare drop off and the parking garage, I would often leave the cd in and sing along.

The songs are smart, using untraditional subject matter e.g., non-vegetarian reptiles, pigs with a carpe-diem attitude and barnyard fowl with laryngitis. I have bought this cd for several birthday gifts and have never heard that anybody did not love it.
