ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Songs on From the Sky follow the course of a child\'s day, from a wake-up song, through play time and story time, to bed-time lullabies.

Music is an excellent way to introduce culture. Music speaks from heart to heart about how people experience the world, capturing a rhythm of life that may be new to an audience, but can be readily understood.

From the Sky introduces several Native American cultures in songs that speak in indigenous languages of happiness and heartache; each song, like each culture, is unique, but presents common human experiences.

Native cultures are too often seen as exotic relics of an historical past.
It is our intention to give people the chance to connect Native culture to their own lives here and now, to learn how the gifts of Native people can enrich the lives of everyone.

____

FROM THE SKY: Stories in Song from Native North America is a compilation of 13 captivating songs from diverse Native American traditions. Sung beautifully in Native languages, these songs combine the vocal talents of Georgia Wettlin-Larsen with the sounds of nature - thunder, water, birds - to tell enchanting stories. Many of these songs echo the voices of vivid animal characters: Blue Jay, the Prairie Dog People, Old Crawfish Woman. Others capture small but meaningful moments that all listeners will recognize from their own lives, from children at play to the parting of loved ones.

Drawing from ancient traditions and from a more recent renaissance of Native identity, these songs convey the variety of Native experience but strike the common chord of the human spirit. From comical songs for play to soothing lullabies, From the Sky progresses as the best day progresses: one surprising moment after another, in tune with the rhythms of nature. From the Sky will introduce listeners to a range of very human emotions, to an attitude of harmony with the natural world, and to the richness of Native culture.

From The American Composer\'s Forum website:

\"Georgia Wettlin-Larsen (Whirling Cloud Woman) is enrolled with the Assiniboine and Nakota from the Fort Peck, Montana reservation. Georgia brings a unique blend of over ten years of social service experience and national renown as a preservationist of American Indian musical expression. Most recently Wettlin-Larsen has been an Indian Child Welfare Program Advisor for the State of Minnesota. She is a strong advocate of music as an essential factor in child development, and has released a CD on the Allies label, From the Sky: Native Stories in Song and Sound, that is especially accessible to children. Her vocal talent and extensive knowledge of songs from diverse Native traditions have produced dramatic interpretations of Native story and song for radio (Song of the Land, NPR), television (Northern Exposure, CBS) and the Smithsonian Institution.\"

Allies: media/art who produced this album is a small, award-winning, Dakota owned and operated media services company. Our commitment to the revitalization of Native languages led to the collaboration with Georgia to produce \"From the Sky.\" Teaching tools to use with the recording are available for educators and parents. Stories In Song
Her voice is magical, goose-bump inducing.
I found myself getting teary-eyed.
Heard her sing a bit from "Turkey in the Straw" on NPR, and they graciously helped me find her. Hope she does more!!!
