Overture

by Hæresiarchs of Dis

The entire album doesn’t stay in old school black metal style, as there are plenty of creepy moments where the guitars slow down to let another instrument pierce through the fog, such as moaning organs or a crying chorus of operatic angels.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"The tune of an incantation, a significant cry, the mien of the operator; these too have a natural leading power over the soul upon which they are directed..."

Hæresiarchs of Dis is an extreme metal collaboration that developed over many years with input from various members scattered over different areas of the globe. The nucleus of Hæresiarchs of Dis is localized to California USA under the organization of Toadstool Enterprises, the project’s main contact and beneficiary.

Hæresiarchs of Dis solidified as a concept through the creativity of Cernunnos, at one time under the name Lord Astaroth, on the Eve of Samhain 1997. Expression came through satanic motifs and anti-Christian sentiments, with artistic inspiration from Dante’s Inferno and Celtic myths. These set the underlying themes for the current and future music to come. The band cycled through several members up until about 2000 and under a variation of names including: Walls of Dis, Malebolgia of Dis, Seven Darks of Dis, and Dis. Several recordings were made between 2000 and 2001, with Cernunnos releasing this material in a very limited number of demos in 2004. The remaining members disbanded after the initial recordings over some disagreements on band direction and sound.

Three years ago Cernunnos took the unfinished material and set about completing it himself, recruiting Viridis Vir for additional samples and programming, and Gilles de Rais for accordion. Cernunnos expanded on the original music endeavor, and now without approval from previous members was able to add “ambient tones” and thicken the sound with dual guitars. This final work, composed, instrumented and produced by Cernunnos, was released in May 2008 in a limited number through Fatima Productions, Toadstool Enterprises under the title Overture.

Review from Belgium
It's ... a blistering mixture of diverse style, accumulating in a maelstrom of bludgeoning black metal frenzy.

I detect some influences of NOX ARCANA in some orchestral parts; but also old Limbonic Art, Emperor, ...

WHOA.
Wasn't quite prepared for this - am a long time metal fan into all the new "extreme metal" styles, but this is something else almost. Goes from the most brutal, sick, tight riffs i've heard in a while straight into twisted symphonies and bizarre elven folk tunes, LOL. Quite diverse but all interesting. Looking forward to more releases for sure.

Dynamic, thoughtful, progressive, but focused enough to not disappear up its ass. Definitely has an Emperor flavor while avoiding pure worship. The riffage is extraordinary and the vocals kill.
