Bassman's Holiday

by Harm van Sleen

Part singer/songwriter, part Americana/roots music, part slick jazzy popsongs, as unlikely a mixture of styles as Top 40 radio used to be.

Album Notes
The album features 14 songs, covering a wide range of musical styles that incorporates country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, gospel, folk, Steely Dan, Little Feat and Joni Mitchell influences. The diversity of styles isn't very common on record albums today, but is of course familiar to anyone who enjoys listening to various artist compilation albums. Perhaps this album resembles what would be my favourite radio music show.

Brown Paper Bag received an honorable mention in the 13th Billboard World Song Contest. Guests include Mr. Boogie Woogie, Dicky Greenwood, Wouter Kiers, Steve Grams, Danny Krieger, Erik Rutjes.

I love music, I'm a musician, and I hate musical pretense. There isn't one note played/sung/written on this CD that wasn't from the heart. There is no agenda here for me in saying this--you may have noticed my name on the list of player credits on the CD. Harm is one of my all-time favorite bassists and when he asked me to play on this CD I was honored and shocked. Why would a world class musician like Harm ask a blues hack like me to play on his first CD? Well, I still don't have the answer to that one but I will tell you how much I love this recording! There is no way to label it, first of all, it's all over the musical map. The compositions are thoughtful, melodic, playful, serious, complicated, and simple-- all at the same time. Okay, so Harm isn't going to win any singing contests, but his voice is honest, just like his approach to all the things in his life. If you're not fortunate enough to know this wonderful musician, buy the CD and you'll have an insight into who he is. If you pass on buying this CD you've got a hole in your soul and you don't eat chicken on Sunday.
