A Good Pairing
Hat Check Girl is the collaboration of Annie Gallup & Peter Gallway, who have both recorded their own CDs. The pairing is a good one, resulting in a strong set of originals on this disc. "Chaque Jour" is a gorgeous track borrowing from Annie's talk-sing style, predominately French lyrics and some dreamy harmonies. "Casey's Nervous Corner" is another favorite of mine with a perky washboard-like rhythm and Annie's witty lyrics, "If I should fall from grace, down the well, the gates of hell, I'll kiss my a*s farewell." "Radio Waves" is another of my favorites with the throbbing bass and that beatnik-like construction with crashing cowbell percussion, "'Radio waves go straight through walls,' said Dave; so imagine what they might be doing right now to your heart." The title track, "This Slow Surprise" and "Once" are also sweet to the ear. This little gem is well worth its discovery. Enjoy!
