Album Notes
HAYMARKET: A NEW FOLK MUSICAL tells the exhilarating true story of Chicago’s infamous Haymarket Affair of 1886. Anarchist labor leaders clash with a brutal police force in a battle for survival, and violent rebels armed with dynamite threaten to destroy the labor movement before it even starts. It is the most important untold story in American history, catapulting us through the world’s first Mayday labor parade, an incident of police violence against protesters, an act of domestic terrorism, a sensationalized trial-of-the-century, and the execution of four innocent men. Driving everything is the relationship of Albert and Lucy Parsons, interracial couple and revolutionaries whose convictions simultaneously drive them apart and hold them together, while changing the very course of history.

Spun by a troupe of actor-musicians known as the Anarchist Folk Band, Haymarket draws on a rich tradition of Americana, bluegrass, and roots sounds, weaving a musical tapestry that is at once contemporary, period, and timeless. As the story traces the contours of events that gave rise to today’s socio-political landscape, we follow the transfer of power from Albert Parsons, a believer in patience and pacifism, to Lucy Parsons, a firebrand advocating for the power of action over good intentions. Who leads the march? And when the revolution comes, what happens next?
