Album Notes
This project went through various phases since it started. I first got the idea after I took a class in energetic healing in the Native American shamanic tradition in 2009. The initial idea was to make a Medicine Wheel in the form of an instrumental musical suite in which the five pieces would not just represent the elements but would also "sound like the elements".

Eventually, I got the idea of making it a more interactive experience by turning it into a guided meditation that would make the meditator go through the five elements of the Medicine Wheel. So I asked my friend and collaborator Trisha Pope (who was also my Sound Healing teacher) if she would be interested in writing meditation texts for this purpose, she gladly accepted. At that point I already had the first two pieces composed (Water and Earth) as instrumental pieces. All I had to do is make room for the spoken voice to be heard in between musical themes interventions.

From then on, for the composition of Air, Fire and Spirit I would compose a piece of music and Trisha would write a text inspired by the element but also by the music.
As we were in the process of writing and composing, I found that the texts were so well written that they sounded more poetic than meditations. At some point Trisha felt like it was appropriate to include some singing, which she did at the end of Earth ("mountains and sky, calling you…"). We liked it so much that we decided to put more singing throughout the suite, especially since we're both singers. Spirit was the first piece in which we did that, and I ended up putting singing parts throughout the whole piece, turning it into a full song. We both liked it and we decided that all the pieces should be turned into songs. In the end there were only a few passages that were left spoken (in Earth and Fire).

What's peculiar about this suite is that the songs don't have the traditional structure of songs, simply for the fact that the music was originally composed to be instrumental, and were later turned into songs.

About the pieces

Water
The music of the main theme is light and fluid.
A stream of water is represented as descending flurries of piano notes.
The following slower part represent the stillness of a large body of water, which is deeper and more grounded. The small clusters of notes sometimes sometimes dissonant breaks the mood like heavy rain drops falling on your head or on your face.

Earth
Beginning with a slow and heavy Native American inspired beat and the low pitched double bass, this piece is exploiting the lower register of the instruments, representing the grounded feel of the earth. The pulse is very regular and anchored, with some interventions of flute and violin that seem like the branches of a rooted tree reaching up but not too far from the trunk.

Air
The music is floating , sometimes it is unclear where the first beat is. The "air" instruments (voices and flute) hold the main role.
The rare bass sounds come from the timpani, which come in as the sound of thunder in the second part ("wild wind") which represent the air when it turns into fury.

Fire
This piece begins with a tribal beat and bursts of upwards piano arpeggios that flare up like uncontrolled flames. The piece is characterized by it's display of passionate warm wailing voices. The second part shows the destructive nature of Fire.

Spirit
This piece is more centered, more balanced and more detached, as spirit is above emotions. It is more neutral.
