Album Notes
On her latest CD, “I Love the Moon,” Helen Avakian, invites you right in to enjoy the warmth with opening cut, “I Want To Be Your Blanket.” Co-produced with mega-talent, Scott Petito (Keith Richards, Dave Brubeck, James Taylor, Mercury Rev), I Love the Moon varies from simple acoustic numbers to full rock band productions with underpinnings of ambient new age elements. From the down home lazy slide guitar on “Bird Flying” to the exuberant “Right Now” to the classic neo-folk title track, “I Love the Moon” covers the quirky, the contemplative, the mystical, and as one would gather from the title, the romantic.

This past year Helen joined Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary to play and sing some of his classic tunes in the grand finale of his concert at Ferry Beach Theater in Maine. She won the Winfield Kansas Walnut Valley Festival’s NewSongs contest Favorite Love Song category twice, produced Florida artist’s Bud Buckley’s CD “A Matter of Time,” and leant her guitar skills to multiple award winning singer Priscilla Herdman’s latest CD. She has appeared in an array of venues from New York city cafes and street corners where she started out, to colleges, festivals and Lincoln Center. She was named number one Favorite Acoustic Act by Rhythm and News magazine four times in a row. Her down to earth stage presence coupled with her rich, expressive voice and impressive guitar skills continue to endear her to an ever-expanding audience.

"Helen Avakian is a genius at getting to the hook fast... keeps her initial verses brief and has a gift for hurtling the listener into her very catchy and hummable choruses. She reminds me of nobody and is so fresh-sounding.\" - Ron Goad, Director of Concerts, Songwriters\' Association of Washington DC and BMI\'s Grassroots Initiative Consultant

\"Meshes her classical guitar roots with a songwriting style that adds a new dimension to the realm of acoustic performers.\" Rhythm and News Magazine

Avakian displays an instinctive sense for songwriting along with a knack for intelligent, poetic lyrics and themes. ...Exceptional guitar playing under just as exceptional singing. Dean Sternberg, Southern Dutchess News

Helen Avakian has what it takes to rise to the top of the hill. A gifted guitarist, composer and storyteller, she also has a pure, clear voice with its own identity. Kate Smith, Taconic Newsan’s music touches a place within.”
John Barry Poughkeepsie Journal

A brilliant songwriter with an effortless vocal style... Todd Paul, Chronogram
Helen Avakian is an incredibly talented musician and songwriter... You will come away from one of her performances with a feeling that you have just seen a rising star.Linda Shell, More Sugar

Helen Avakians guitar playing (just about the best I have heard anywhere) utilizes a blend of classical, Flamenco, and folk pop, creatively woven together into a fusion that works beautifully with her lyrics. There is thoughtful detail as well as a good dose of energy in her flawlessly executed music. Rebekah Lowden, Hudson Valley Folk Guild News

Helen Avakian\'s appearance was transcendent. The climax of the evening, her incredibly nuanced and dynamic performance brought the crowd to its feet. Steve & Terri Massardo, talent bookers/hosts, John St. Jam

Like Joni Mitchell, Helen Avakian can turn lyrics inside out... In addition to writing some pretty strong lyrics, Avakian writes music that remains gentle on the ears while pulling aggressively on the heart... Helen Avakians music touches a place within. John Barry Poughkeepsie Journal

The title track, "I Love The Moon" is about as good as any pop/love song I can think of. Right up there with the great classics as "Yesterday", "Both Sides Now", "Hello" (Lionel Ritchie), "I'll Never Find Another You". The whole CD is excellent, but she really outdid herself with the title track. I've been following Helen's music for years, and she kept us waiting between CD's, but it was sure worth the wait.
