ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
On Soldiers and Sweethearts you will hear songs that show the enthusiastic, flag waving sentiments of the time (such as Goodbye Broadway, Hello France) mixed with songs that echo the more personal emotions of the soldiers and their families left behind (Hello Central, Give Me No Man's Land). This CD begins with George M. Cohan's wartime hit Over There —written just after war was declared in 1917. Humorous songs of Army life (Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning and Good Morning, Mr. Zip-Zip-Zip!) depict civilian soldiers adjusting to the discomforts of military life. Love songs memorialize the romances interrupted by war (If You Were the Only Girl in the World and There's a Long, Long Trail). Songs such as Oh! Frenchy and We're Gonna Follow the Boys reflect the changes in women's roles from patient, loyal partners to participants in the war effort. And then there are the songs that portray the doughboys' longing to return home once the Kaiser is overthrown (Coast Artillery and It Won't Be Long 'Till I Come Back). The final song, the 1919 postwar duet Look for the Silver Lining, expresses the optimistic sentiments of a couple eager to move beyond the difficulties of the past.

Grab a copy, start listening and singing along.
The new CD from Helen Breen “Soldiers and Sweethearts. Songs from World War I” lets you savor the flavor of a long gone era while providing wonderful music -- stirring, melodic and satisfying.

The selection blends well-known, hum-able, songs with lesser known ditties of historic interest and charm. Due to the skillful arrangements you’ll find a very nice variety of tones, voices and beat -- from cheery and peppy to poignant and longing.

Presented in a masterful duet, the memorable classic ""If You Were the Only Girl in the World"" brings familiar music and lyric with fresh spirit, meaningful for today. "After You've Gone" is another exquisite rendition of a timeless tune. And, "Long, Long Trail a Winding" is done in a heart piercing interpretation.

For a change of pace how about: “Sister Susie’s Sewing Shirts for Soldiers” and “Oh How I Hate To Get Up in the Morning”. For the bonus of a historic perspective, don’t forget to read the fascinating notes.

This CD, wrapping up with “Look For The Silver Lining”, is one you’ll enjoy playing again and again.

The heart and soul of the WWI doughboy: optimism, perseverance, discovery, adven
Helen Breen has just released her second album, Soldiers and Sweethearts. These are songs from World War I, that turning point in Western Civilization when we lost so much and began setting forth in a new direction. The music evokes a spirit of optimism, perseverance, discovery, adventure, love and longing. This is a labor of love and a work of art, pure and simple. Get it for yourself, and get some to stuff in the Christmas stockings of loved ones. It will bring forth both a smile and a tear! Enjoy...
