Album Notes
"Carvings" offers a flourish of vocal harmonies and an extensive range of acoustic instruments. Swiss musicians David Aebli (bass, mandolin, bouzouki, guitar) and, Ferdi Rauber (tabla, udu, gongs, percussion, “nature sounds“, didgeridoo) are featured on the album complimenting Helen Davey’s vocals, piano, guitars, hackbrett and accordion.

The music on "Carvings" is a cross cultural fusion of contemporary world/folk music with blues/jazz influences that takes us to fresh new sound worlds.. The twelve original song texts explore the album's theme: how life leaves it's tracings on us, carving who we are. Intimate, at times melancholic or joyous, the album is a celebrations of what it means to live our lives being connected with and touched by others.

Music to re-enchant your senses.

quirky and lyrical
“carvings” is a wonderful, evocative, lyrical collection with a quirky fun edge. We have been listening to it in our lounge, in the car, and around the place, and marvelling just how distinctively unique helen’s vocal quality is. During my first listen, I was vividly reminded of the first time I ever heard helen sing (some 30 years ago). I remember being blown away by that pure agile quality she has. In the meantime, there have been so many other layers added as well – grit, breadth of musical nuance, cultural connectedness – so many things that I can’t articulate but that need a language akin to describing a fine perfume. It will take many more listenings to plumb the nuances of her harmonies and blends of sound. And of course, just to relish each track for the fun of it!

I like the way the CD gathers so many aspects of the imaginative side of life and invites us to revisit and attend to the precious things. The lyrics are evocative, and brave. I think that the album’s central theme of carvings is a lovely, gentle way of tracing what is true about our lives – whether by our own choice and volition, or whether by circumstance or others’ actions – and allowing it to be beautiful. That invites much pondering.

Helen ist eine fantastische "musikalische Geschichtenerzählerin" und ist dabei einfallsreich, feinfühlig und oft witzig in der musikalischen Umsetzung. Zwischenräume werden zu Musik!
