Album Notes
Artist – Helen O’Shea
Title – "Turning Tides…"

Helen O'Shea, a native of Ireland, left Montreal, Canada and her career at McGill Medical School to move to Princeton, New Jersey, USA with her young family. When her kids asked her to stay home, her husband Paul suggested that she explore her first love, singing, during her career break. What started out as a hobby soon developed into a full time passion and when Helen met two time Grammy winning producer Marc Swersky in 2014, her music took off in a new direction. Since then, she has been working with Marc as her mentor, co-writer & producer. In 2016, Helen was invited to showcase her original songs at the Cape May Singer Songwriter Festival where Helen & Marc were honored that out of over 100 songs considered, the organizers chose "Moments" (O'Shea & Swersky) to include on the festival CD, just before Helen released her first EP “Mama Told You…” in 2016.

"Turning Tides..." features a collection of 10 original songs about loving, leaving, loss, joy, and making your dreams come true! The CD was recorded at Shorefire Recording Studios in Long Branch, NJ, USA and features the amazing musicians from what Helen calls "Marc Swersky's Dream Team" - Steve Holley on drums (Wings), Todd Caldwell on piano & organ (Crosby, Stills, Nash), Vinnie Mascolo on lead guitar (Tunnels to Holland), Marc Swersky on bass guitar & piano, Joseph DeMaio on lead guitar, as well as Helen's favorite cousin and world famous button accordion player Billy McComiskey. For "Aftermath" the team was joined by the talented Leo Sawikin (The Chordaes) and Max Ventura on backing vocals as well as Garry Mazzaroppi on double bass. David Ross, from Helen's performance band "The Shanakee Project", added drums on "Soulfriend ~ Anamchara". Helen O'Shea believes that music changes lives, so enjoy listening to "Turning Tides..."!

My heartfelt thanks to the love of my life Paul O'Shea (Another Lifetime), and our amazing kids Luke (All That You Do) & Lauren (Lovin’ You) - for all of your loving support and kindness every step of the way!

With grateful appreciation for all of the wonderful musicians in my life who challenge me to become better every day – especially the wonderful Marc Swersky (simply a joy to work with!), the talented Joseph DeMaio (can’t wait to get back to Shorefire!) and my gifted vocal coach Rich Bozic (Bozic Voice Studios) as well as all the amazing musicians and singers who contributed their talent to this project! With very special thanks to my brothers in music – my amazing band mates in “The Shanakee Project” for their collaboration and dedication to bringing these songs to life on stage - you guys rock in every sense of the word!

In memory of my lovely father Joe McNamara - who always believed I could do anything?! - here you go, Joe…
“Oh the takin’ of you has bereft me, I am shaken it’s true since you left me,
When I’m low or I fall you still lift me, So I know you will always be with me.”

Lyrics of love
Helens lyrics are straight from the heart. She skillfully captures the depth of a woman’s love for her family. The album production provides a the perfect wrapper and bow.

Love the Celtic twists
This album is unique in many ways and such a blend of traditions that it is hard to categorize, but I do think the term "AmeriCeltiCana" is an apt one to summarize the Celtic twists that are interwoven with pure Americana. The lyrics are thoughtful and speak to the heart of anyone who listens. I love to pop this CD in for my morning commute to work as it is a great way to start the day and make me feel inspired.

Love it!
Fun album - lovely songs, well-recorded, and Helen has a beautiful, expressive voice. Looking forward to hearing what she does next!

Sweets for the Soul
Helen's songs warm my heart! I'm especially fond of "All That You Are" and "Please Be Kind". Her lyrics are lovely poems that encourage us to feel our feelings, be compassionate and cherish each moment. Helen understands that time does so much more than fly — it warps and wrinkles.

Solid Production with Great Performances by All
First off, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this album. I'm no producer or sound engineer, but I have a just as much of an appreciation for those who are as the musicians performing the music they produce. Technology has allowed anyone to record and distribute music, but I'm happy to see that artists, like Helen O'Shea, value putting together the right musicians, producer and engineer to ensure her music is heard as it should be. I love listening to this album with headphones. Each time I do, I'm even more impressed with how every instrument and vocal on each track is balanced so perfectly to compliment the others - and each can be heard so distinctly from one another.
Now to the music itself - many these tracks have this terrific familiar reminiscent feeling, but don't get me wrong, they don't sound like copies. It's something about the style. I find myself trying to figure out who might be O'Shea's influences. I agree with CD Baby recommending to me that I would like this if I like Mary Chapin Carpenter & Christine McVie. As soon as I heard O'Shea's voice, McVie came to mind, and the first track "All That You Do" definitely reminds of a Mary Chapin Carpenter style, circa early 1990s, and other songs that were constructed in that precise formula that can cross over from country to folk to light rock radio. The rock organ also reminded me of a Wallflowers sound. And with all of the tracks that follow, it's clear that O'Shea is writing content that actually means something and not just penning stuff to fill an album. There's a lot of heart here, sharing a lot of observation and reflection, where O'Shea seems to be teaching some life lessons to a younger generation.
