ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra is a San Diego group performing since 2005. We play arrangements published from 1890 to 1929, varying our instrumentation to suit the period. Sometimes we are a 1915 theatre orchestra featuring flute, clarinet, violins, tenor sax (covering the original cello parts), three brass, and rhythm; sometimes we morph into a 1925 "modern dance orchestra" composed of violins, three brass, three saxes, and rhythm, with the latter expanded to include a banjo. We sing from time to time, and co-leader Bob Pinsker occasionally rolls out a solo piano piece. We strive for the style of the period, and dancers of the old steps love our tangos, one-steps, two-steps, fox trots, maxixes, waltzes (even one in 5/4 time!), and slow drags. Besides "Sas-pa-torious!," we have two earlier CDs on the Stomp Off label.
