ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Thank you for your interest in my CD, "Defying Gravity." I'm an actress and singer based in New York City. I've toured North America with Les Miserables as Cosette, and The Light in the Piazza as the Clara understudy and the new musical version of A Christmas Story as the Mother understudy. In NYC, I've been in the cast of Frankenstein Off Broadway, countless readings and concerts and also founded a cabaret series called People You May Know. (Look us up on facebook and YouTube!) I've also worked at many regional theatres from Ventura, CA to Beach Haven, NJ. Always traveling!

On top of my theatre work, I do some film and tv - I was featured in an episode of HBO's Boardwalk Empire's 2nd season and recently shot a brief scene in a French film called Amour Et Turbulences. Stay tuned to my website for the most up to date details! In the meantime, if anybody wants to produce more recordings of mine, let me know! ha!

According to my family, I was always dramatic. (Go ahead and laugh, because I'm laughing even as I say that to myself!) I used to watch all the classic movie musicals and then proceed to act them out! My family has always enjoyed going to the theatre, so we used to go to whatever musical was in town. I always liked doing that, but it wasn't until we went to Toronto to see The Phantom of the Opera that I totally fell in love with musical theatre.

Eventually, I started going to some summer performing arts camps and taking many more dance classes. And for some reason my Uncle Rick asked me to sing in his wedding when I was about 13 years old. (Maybe because I was too old to be a flower girl and too young to be a bride's maid?) I don't think anybody really knew if I could sing very well at that point, so he took a big chance on me! Well, the pressure of that got me into voice lessons that eventually led to choir and theatre... and then I was hooked for good!

I feel so at home when I'm performing. Once I got started in theatre, it seemed like it was only natural to continue to pursue it. I have an incredibly supportive group of friends and family to thank for much of my success. I hope I continue to make them proud. I've been truly lucky so far!

Recording is my absolute favorite way to sing. It's so great to be able to hear every little thing. The perfectionist in me just LOVES that. To be able to make it better and be so intimate at the same time. When I record, even though I'm sitting in a studio singing to a microphone, I pour my soul into the music. I hope you can hear that when you listen to my CD.

Again, thank you for checking out my CD. If you want to see more of me, please check out my website. www.lesliehenstock.com. There are lots of pictures, my complete resume, some fun reviews, and my current performance schedule, as well as updates about my CD, and whatever else I might be working on. Also, you can contact me through my website. I love hearing from people, so please send me a note if you feel like it!

get this CD!!!
When I first listened to Leslie Henstock's CD I was so pleasantly surprised! First of all, Leslie has a beautiful voice, but what is so wonderful is that she uses it in many different and surprising ways. Just when you think she is just a powerful belter, she sings a song that shows us a stunning lyric soprano, then she shows us her soulful softer side with an awesome version of "I Can't Make You Love Me"(one of my favorites on the cd.) She can really do it all. Bottom line - This album is great!!!

Leslie Henstock: A Vocal Diamond
Having had the pleasure of seeing Leslie perform as "Cosette" in the national tour of 'Les Miz', writing the first CDBaby review for her is a privilege.

What I love about Leslie and her choices is that she *acts* them. Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Think of Me" from 'Phantom' (a possible Christine in the future?) and "Memory" from 'Cats' sound fresh, new, and inviting with Leslie's interpretations. Newer theatrical pieces like Jason Robert Brown's "I Can Do Better Than That" and Stephen Schwartz's "Defying Gravity" showcase a more modern Broadway sound. Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" and Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" are given sensitive renderings. Leslie's voice goes from Broadway belt to legitimate, effortless soprano-- a true gift that some singers have a hard time doing. She deserves great success.

A simply gorgeous voice!!!
To start, Leslie Henstock needs to be seen on Broadway as either Glinda or Elphaba (or BOTH) in WICKED one day (Godwilling)! Her talent goes both ways, so to speak...she can sing pop and "belt" stuff (as in the title song), but she can also do more legitimate musical theatre material (as in "Think of Me"). Leslie is such a unique performer and I can't wait to see more of her in the future. You will NOT regret purchasing this album! Every single track is a delight, including the popular songs "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Time After Time" (the timeless Cyndi Lauper ballad). BRAVO, Leslie, on a perfect album!

A great singing actress, a great selection of songs.
Leslie Henstock. What a delight she is! A lyric soprano, a belter, a legit Broadway-type singer? Yes, Leslie is all these, but most of all she a singing actress; her songs sensitively interpreted more than simply sung. Listen to the verse of her very first song “Not for the Life of Me” a finely acted piece of storytelling before she rips joyfully into the chorus. Leslie shows her acting ability throughout, in the tenderness of “Wildflowers”, the ditzy humor of “Feelings” (not the old pop song, this is from the Adam and Eve section of the Broadway musical “The Apple Tree”), the edge of determination, toughness and anger in “I Can Do Better Than That”, the gentle warmth of “Time After Time”, and the aching longing of “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. “Think Of Me” from “The Phantom of the Opera” is often thrown off as a high-flying showpiece for sopranos. Leslie has the sweetness and purity of voice for it, and she thrillingly takes the high notes of the cadenza, but she also makes the words mean something. “Soon” from Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” works perhaps the least well of all the tracks, simply because it’s a difficult song to grasp out of context and the ending is so abrupt it feels unfinished. Still, it’s exciting when a singer takes a chance on a difficult, rarely-heard piece. Two other songs that have been heard perhaps too often are “Memory” and “Over The Rainbow”, but Leslie’s manages to make them sound fresh. She darkens her tone to bring out all the emotions of the first, then lightens it for the second, sounding like the young girl the singer is supposed to be. Her take on “It Would Have Been Wonderful” is touchingly wistful, and “Defying Gravity” builds to an electrifying climax. This CD leaves you wanting more…and more… Let’s hope it won’t be too long before Leslie has a follow up CD

Great Voice, good variety of songs, fresh interpretations.
Great cd to relax to, entertain friends with. Leslie adds her own touch to these broadway and pop classics that gives them a breath of fresh air. Defying Gravity is terrific! Hearing her sing the role of Cosette in Les Miz inspired me to buy this cd and I am glad I did. Buy the cd and go see her in the tour of The Light in the Piazza.
