ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In October, 2015 we lost someone very close to all of our hearts, someone who touched the lives of countless people all over the world. Dr. Lee Shaw was a brilliant player, teacher, and mentor, and her commitment to her art continues to be a constant source of inspiration for the three of us. To her we dedicate this music.

For Rich and Jeff, Lee was our bandleader, friend and inspiration. We spent countless hours playing gigs together - 24 years Lee & Rich, 14 years Lee, Rich and Jeff - talking, hanging and traveling through Europe, upstate New York, Oklahoma (Lee’s home state) and the Midwest. Lee was also Nick’s teacher. In his words, Lee gave him “the confidence to persevere. She discovered a particular meaning in life through music that I may never know, but just the thought of being able to reach that level of meaning gives me the motivation to be the greatest person, musician, friend, etc. that I can possibly be. If there's a nirvana, or heaven on earth, or whatever you might call it, I would say that she truly experienced it.”

It was Lee who introduced Rich and Jeff to a shy young Nick Hetko when he was a junior in high school. Nick was looking for a rhythm section to perform his demos for applications to music schools, the Grammy band, the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Scholarship, Brubeck Colony and the ASCAP Composers Award. Rich and Jeff agreed and from the first song, felt a chemistry that we have continued to hone and refine over years of playing together (by the way, Nick got into every school, Grammy Band and won every award and scholarship as noted above). This association has produced a wonderful friendship and the playing continues to develop and expand as a trio.

In recording this homage to Lee, we hoped to capture and honor her generosity of spirit, musicianship, composition, pianistic ability, mentorship, humanity, and grace with which she both carried and conducted herself. We hope this music reminds you of our friend and, if she is new to you, causes you to seek out her work. May she continue to inspire us all to live with and for passion.

We love you Lee!
