Album Notes
East meets West: New Jazz Guitar Sound of 10 Japanese Classics 2 is Hideo Date’s 2nd album with this concept. He composed introductions and endings and re-harmonized the melody of each tune for solo jazz guitar. Some of the songs have additional new melodies or improvisations as an arrangement. He did his best to bring a new cool sound to these old melodies, most of them known as “Doyo,” the Japanese word for children’s songs. With his 1951 Gibson ES-350, he uses A-432Hz tuning for a soothing, healing effect. He offers a new fresh sound to these well-known Japanese melodies with Wes Montgomery-style jazz block chords and his own finger picking style. Recorded in August 2019, Berkeley, California.
