Album Notes
Named Best Musician in Albuquerque The Magazine’s Best of City 2008. Hillary's most recent release, No Easy Way (2008)—“probably the truest representation of what I do”—features big band funk, nasty blues, neosoul, and gospel-flavored tracks, and includes the legendary “funky drummer” Clyde Stubblefield and trumpeter Bobby Shew.

Hill is also featured on pianist, vocalist, composer Kevin Hayes’ 2007 recording The Dreamer, and she appeared with Kevin at the 2007 Gathering of the Vibes, along with Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, Peter Bernstein, and Bill Stewart.

Whatever the genre or venue, Hillary Smith always delivers soulful performances that fill listeners’ hearts with her warmth, love, and sheer musical excitement

Hillary Smith (No Easy Way)
Killer Voice- This will stand the test of time, placing Hillary Smith among the great R&B vocalist with Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Chaka Khan and anyone else that comes close! The trax are in the Stax/Atlantic vein, taking you back to a time where groove and integrity walked hand in hand. Check it out!!

This album is killah! Serious booty being laid down in these grooves as well as great swing and jazz influences. If the music doesn't give you the notion to put your feet into motion, then you've just been pronounced dead at the scene. If it does move you, then you need to see Hillary perform live, which shouldn't be too hard to do if you are in or near New Mexico.
The musicianship of the studio band on this CD is outstanding. Hill’s vocal performance is nothing short of awe inspiring; you can feel the soul pouring out of every word she sings, just like her live performances. For instance; the vocal crescendo leading to a fabulous organ solo on "Let Love Go" still gives me goose bumps. The arrangement and funky groove on "Never Make Your Move Too Soon" is so thick you'll need a knife (and check that fat baritone sax solo by Glen). But perhaps my favorite is “Ain’t Nobody Like You”, in which the chords, horns and vocals just seem to flow from the start to the ending, where the stop time on the outro builds tension like a rubber band about to break.
I’ve enjoyed Hill’s amazing vocals since the days of Strictly Taboo, and her performance on this CD is no exception; still surrounding herself with top notch musicians, still delivering with love, guts and soul, except now with a quality only derived from maturity. New Mexico and the rest of the world is blessed to have a celebrity of her caliber in our presence. Thanks Hill, for all the great music!
Peace, Stevie

A huge fan

No Easy Way
Why isn't she signed? I have been listening to Hillary Smith since the '80's with Motion Picture-she keeps getting stronger-better than anyone out there. This recording is proof!!!!

NM chick loves Hill!!
Oh man, NM and the world has been waiting for this cd. Ever since I first heard Higher Ground, Hillary's last cd and got hooked on her powerful, soulful voice, I wanted more...but have waited a lo-o-o-ong time. Of all the great artists I listen to, Hillary is the only one that gives me goosebumps and then "forces" me to jump up and move. From funk to jazz to blues, Hill does it all and is just amazing!!! She takes a song you have heard a thousand times before and makes it totally her own....fresh and innovative...good example is "I Want to Be Around".

Of course, the header "I Prefer You" is outstanding but as I listen, I keep saying the next one and then the next one is my favorite...so hard to choose. I come down to "Standin'" and "Let Love Go" on the goosebump meter which dictates for me that oh so pure truth in song and tone that cuts to the soul. "Gotta Serve Somebody" is a solid first in the "gotta jump up and shake a leg" category. "Who Do You Think You're Fooling" is pure sassy...I love Sassy. Okay, maybe that is my favorite. I give up. Should any one person have the range and diversity that this lady exhibits? Oh man.....gotta love this cd.

Hillary Smith- No Easy Way
"No Easy Way" is a high-end, professional CD featuring one of this country's most soulful singers, Hillary Smith. This production clearly demonstrates her many faceted vocal styles, accompanied by a mind-blowing band and a killer horn section. The arrangements are slick, and unpretentious

Hillary is blessed with the gifts of effortless phrasing, tender inflections that barely glide across her vocal chords and then hits you with a strong, heartfelt interpretation. The energy of this organization is inspiring. I felt like I went to church!

Always welcome downunder!
I went searching on cdbaby.com for something cool, new, exciting and independent, not some over-produced garbage that commercial radio stations and big record companies these days have so much to answer for. And I found exactly what I was looking for. No easy way by Hillary Smith is one of the finest cd's I have heard, from start to finish. From the first down beat you can feel that oh so familiar drum groove of the legendary Clyde Stubblefield and despite the title, Ms Smith seems to glide effortlessly from track to track. Whether it's hard hitting funk like "love come down" or sweet soulful blues like "Let love go" Ms Smith does it with style
The very exsitence of this CD is a beautiful thing
with Ms Smith boasting the most amazing, versatile and tastful voice at this moment in time it would have been sad to not have it on record.
Ok Aretha, you've had your turn, and we've appreciated every single moment of it, but it's now time to pass the flame on to next runner in the worlds greatest soul/funk singer relay.
For anyone contemplating buying this album my advice is simple. Buy it and but it quick because I'm sure they will not last.
Lastly, thank you to the beautiful Ms Hillary Smith, to everyone involved in this CD and to cdbaby.com for being the link between us the consumer and fantastic undiscovered talent.

Raunchier than Gladys Knight, smoother than Etta James and deserving of worldwide recognition. Not one bad track on the album...Hillary thank you for recording this album. There are far too few female blues/soul singers, and you are helping to redress the imbalance.
This is the perfect gift to buy ANYONE for their birthday, anniversary, Christmas, or just because you want to buy someone something!
Fantastic arrangements, full-bodied band, strong yet emotional vocals, the type of music that satisfies all the senses! To get a really satisfying music-fix... I recommend you listen to Hillary often!
