A Record Worth Waiting For
I’ve been a fan of Hillman’s songwriting for a long time. It ‘s been a decade between cds and I like the story that goes with that: that he dropped off the radar for that amount of time and came back with songs that are better than ever. A few things that continue to work for me about the songs he writes: Interesting, intelligent lyrics that cover a lot of ground. Never cliché. Lyrics that are smart, sometimes humorous, applied to a lot of interesting subjects. Narration with a point of view and an attitude, sometimes clever, but without drawing attention to itself, never too precious or sentimental, but when the heart shows it is gratifying and genuine. For me, his lyrics strike the right blend of all these things. His music is fun and has pop influences in the best possible way. The quick spontaneity applied to the recording of this record, the trust allowing really good musicians to improvise and bring their own sound to the table, results in a record that has life, musicianship that serves the songs, and an album made better by real collaboration. I can (and do) listen to this record again and again. Do not hesitate to buy it. This is a keeper.
