ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Biography

These three Italian musicians and their American Co-author/singer Lisa are writing music with a message and having a laugh while doing it.

We met in 2005 when Lisa called Marco on the advice of a friend to deepen her understanding of the piano. We decided that same day that we needed to form a band despite our very different musical backgrounds. Lisa has written and recorded Pop and Dance tunes topping dance charts with bacon popper in 1998 and has been performing live throughout Europe for years while Marco is a consummate Jazz pianist with extensive live and recording experience as well. The affinity was instantaneous .. within 2 weeks we met up with Massimo ,The Mountain Man, (http://www.myspace.com/massimosaviola) a bassist with a Bossa Nova background just like Cesare (http://www.myspace.com/cesarevalbusa) mythic drummer both long experienced in the Italian music scene..as session players and in other projects that brought them all over Europe and America as well , within another couple weeks we wrote our first Hippie Tendencies tune Feel No Pain . An effortless bonding musically has kept us at it and we’ve been gigging regularly around Europe ever since, singing our original tunes and revisiting covers with our own vision. Our chemistry is palpable on stage and transmits whether we’re crooning or rocking. Impossible to miss that we are inspired by artists like b.dylan, j.mitchell and w.guthrie , j.taylor, as well as a. difranco, h.hancock , d.matthews band and on and on ..
Hippie Tendencies nevertheless have achieved a groove unique to themselves, with a back to basics, natural sound produced by talented inspired musicians which blends seamlessly with the poignant, passionate lyrics.

Though each of these multifaceted musicians have previously recorded and released their music independently and on major labels with other projects their self titled debut as a group is scheduled for release January 17 2010 on the new independent label Penthar. Guest musicians are rife throughout the album including Simone Boffa (Granny says Band) and Simone Guiducci on electric and acoustic guitar respectively as well as Fillipo De Paoli (Plan de Fuga) on Acoustc Guitar, Zsuzsanna Czinki on cello, Betty Vittori and Cristian Codenotti on background vocals among others.

PRESS
"The band put their heads together and they came up with their first single “Feel no Pain”, pure soul-rock with a vague touch of Joan Armatrading’s style and that is exactly where the band intends to venture: a mix of soul, funk and soft jazz, that automatically reminds us of the ‘Cool Generation’ of the 80’s, to Working Week and Sade….especially in tracks like the refined, mellow jazz-ballad “Open Letter". "Three expert Italian musicians and an American singer/songwriter. They are Hippie Tendencies.."
Rockol

"The skills of the four musicians is recognizable at the first listen they know how to produce an energetic dynamic sound that is sweet as well with retro tones. " "Lisa's voice is strong and hot taking you to another dimension , one of peace."

Sometimes, the social network does actually bring some very interesting people and in this case, music, to me.
A couple of years ago I got hooked up to Hippie Tendencies through MySpace. I really loved a couple of demos they had posted. This music has charm to spare on top of excellent composition, thoughtful lyrics, and killer execution. The rhythm section grooves.
Since the singer, Lisa Marie Simmons, was kind enough to give me a lovely comment on my myspace profile, I started a long-distance conversation with her. She's lived and worked in Italy for a while. There, she ran into some jazz players and together they built a terrific band with their collective abilities.
Imagine a great wide-ranging jazz rhythm section, terrific keyboard player coupled with great singing, all wrapped up in a sometimes funny, occasionally ironic pop structure.
Anyway, I was very taken with their demo.
A few weeks ago, Lisa sent me their completed album. I think it more than delivers on the promise from the demos. These are thoughtful songs that are carefully crafted by world-class musicians. This album has made it into my regular play list. I find myself singing the hooks unconsciously.
Comments from some of the folks with whom I've shared Hippie Tendencies are, “I love her voice”, and “I want to bathe in the vocals, like I do with Suzanne Sterling”
Lisa has an activist side which I find very resonant. And I really enjoy her sense of humor. "Poppy Rock" takes a shot at our commoditized music business where original music has trouble finding a place. And "Shame" takes a shot of all of us when we're unconscious about how our behavior affects the world in which we live.
I'd like to give particular kudos to the group's drummer who may have some of the best brushes technique that I've heard in a very long time. The bass player creates a big fat bass float upon which to the rest of the music can rest easily.
I told the band that I'd be happy to plug them from my little neck of the Web universe. I encourage you to give them a listen.
Cheers, Brook
