ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
RELEASED IN JAPAN ON 3/29/17, IN US ON 8/4/17
Conceived and composed entirely by Hiroe, this Russell Ferrante production includes Peter Erskine on drums along with bassist Michael Valerio and a bevy of special guests playing instruments from their respective cultures. Each tune on this singular concept album is named for some aspect of the sun and incorporates musical scales and other elements from such diverse countries as Japan, Spain, Ireland, Morocco, Indonesia, India and Peru.

Other musicians participating in this album includes Hiromitsu Agatsuma (tsugaru shamisen), Alex Acuña (drums and other percussion), Russell Ferrante (melodica), Andy Narell (steel drums), Charlie Bisharet (violin), Paul Livingstone (sitar), Kaori Aoi (Okinawa sanshin), Eric Rigler (Uilleann Pipes), Geoff Dent (Indonesian instruments), Dimitris Mahlis (oud), Larry Koonse (tenor ukulele), Edgar Huaman Vera (zampoña), Kazuiko Kondo (sax and flute), Brad Dutz (tabla), Antonio de Jerez (hand claps).

+ In a world perforated by bullets of war and muddied by cultural misunderstandings, Heroe Sekine endeavors to bring people together with new music that celebrates a variety of countries, pulled lovingly under the umbrella of jazz. She has composed every track on this compact disc with the obvious intention of showing us how much alike we are and unified, instead of divided. Music can do that. --- Musicalmemoirs’s Blog

+ I’m telling you here and now that I chime in with Sekine herself, who, proud of her creation, is quite sure no one has quite done it before. -- Vampirus Veritus by Mark Tucker.

+ Pianist Hiroe Sekine does a successful job in taking various sounds from all over the world and bringing them into the jazz family. The core team of Peter Erskine/dr and Michael Valerio/b team up with a Pier One Imports collection of guests, with Eric Rigler supplying Uilleann Pipes and Charlie Bisharet bringing his violin for a Gaellic jig with jazz on “La Greine Sunny Day, while a festive Iberian dance is supplied by Kazuhiko/ss and Antonio de Jerez/palms on a festive “Brillo de Sol.” Western harmonics and Southern Asia sitar and percussion create a sonic curry on “Soory Kaa Prakaasha,” and a mystical caravan pulsates in the Sahara with Bisharet’s violin and Dimitris Mahils’ oud on the drifting “Alshams.” Trips to Japan, Peru, Indonesia and the Pacific Rim are also included, making this a rich collection of exotic sounds that invite you across the world and into a jazz venue. –- Jazz Weekly
