Album Notes
Liner Notes:
To those of us who have been here a while, Hoaxer entered the Minnesota Jazz scene as yet another cleverly named project-of-convenience for up and coming musicians looking for a few summer gigs before heading off to various prestigious music programs in the Fall. Their first performance at Jazz Central Studios in Minneapolis caused enough buzz to get them a coveted booking at the 2016 Twin Cities Jazz Festival. This is a big national festival where there were world famous headliners, and many, many groups of astounding players giving amazing performances, but Hoaxer performed a program of original compositions of such cohesion and swagger and spontaneous energy, that it probably was the best overall small group ensemble concept and delivery of the entire festival. I am not alone in this opinion. The remainder of their standing-room-only performances that summer made it imperative that we capture and document the starting point for what is sure to be one of the more important collaborations of young Jazz musicians to emerge from Minnesota in a long time.
These are bold claims about an ensemble that has hasn’t been around for much more than a year, but when you hear the tracks on this recording, which were delivered live and in the round with everyone co-located in the large Studio ‘A’ at Creation Audio, without a scrap of music or seemingly any need to discuss forms or arrangements, you will understand why this recording was produced.
