This CD is dedicated with love to the memory of Frank Smoak.
We are grateful for all the fantastic music he shared with us.

Homeboy Special came together for a short while to play a few gigs in the New South Music Hall in Columbia, SC. It was a made up of musicians previously working together in different configurations in various bands. Frank Smoak and Tommy Toglio were together in The Brother Band. Cleve Edwards played with Horizon and Nappy Patch. Steve White, Donnie Rhodes, and Johnny Hilton were previously in the group Savannah.

Homeboy Special Tracks

1. Last Night I Had a Dream About You (Dave Fuller): Two lover’s quarrel, resulting in a break up. A dream, however, brings one of the pair to the realization they belong together.

2. Closer (Johnny Hilton): An optimistic view of the future shared with good friends. A rhythm and blues shuffle on the chorus makes you want to get up and shag!

3. Looking for a Home (Donnie Rhodes): We all need to be with someone that makes us feel loved, accepted, and needed. That search is not always easy.

4. Woodrow (Johnny Hilton): Sometimes the most simple things and gestures are the ones that give life real meaning as we strive to be all we can be and glean the most from each day.

5. Good Looking Woman (Johnny Hilton): As many soon learn, “beauty’s only skin deep” and the queen of diamonds "will beat you if she's able"

6. Tighter (Donnie Rhodes): More truthfulness and trust are usually the best medicine for a relationship that’s not going well.

7. A Gift For You (Johnny Hilton) Feelings and relationships are more important than possessions. The best gifts are always one’s love and time.

8. Never Never Land (Johnny Hilton) Take a journey though a land of dreams and fantasy that may have a promise of true love and happiness ever after.

9. Baby Bird (Frank Smoak) A haunting melody folded around a story of innocence, naiveté and young love that most likely won’t last.

10. Let’s Talk Some (Johnny Hilton) This Bluesy petition for some good loving holds a somewhat tentative promise for the future. Very tasteful and classic instrumental work.

11. South Country Boy (Johnny Hilton) The dreams of a young man don’t always match up with those of his lover or his family.

12. Question Is (Johnny Hilton) This suite includes encouragement from one drinking buddy to another; a Monday morning appointment; and a subtle lover’s triangle.

13. Hoe Cake (Johnny Hilton) The story of growing up on a farm with loving parents who were always forgiving, wrapped in a little country ditty.

14. Fast Boogie (Frank Smoak) Classic blues lyrics with timeless boogie guitar riffs and nuance as only Frank could provide so impeccably.

Homeboy Special Lyrics

1. Last Night I Had a Dream About You
(Dave Fuller)

Last night I had a dream about you
You were lying in my arms again
You kept me warm beneath a sugar moon
As we danced in a golden room
Can’t remember who was wrong or who was right
Why we ever gave up love and learned to fight
All I really want to know, All I really want to know
All I want to know, Is where you are tonight

Last night I dreamed you were beside me
We were running through the falling rain
In your eyes I see two moons of blue
Rolling down into the morning dew
Can’t remember when you left who was to blame
Doesn’t matter I just want you back again
All I really want to know, All I really want to know
All I want to know, Is where you are tonight

2. Closer
(Johnny Hilton)

Sitting her in the quiet of the evening
First time alone in quite a while
Last few days been kinda busy
Good friends walking that second mile

Makes you think of what you’ve done
And you know it aint been much
But it takes one drop to start an ocean
So it is with us

I’m getting closer all the time, patching up my mind
Smiling ‘bout these funny friends I find
I’m getting closer all the time, patching up my mind
Smiling ‘bout these funny friends I find

Maybe someday the clouds will pull back
And we can see right straight on through
I’m sitting quiet and I thinking baby
Thinking ‘bout me and thinking ‘bout you

And I’m wondering what to do
Questions timeless still they’re new
But it’s the searching that’ll see me through

I’m getting closer all the time, patching up my mind
Smiling ‘bout these funny friends I find
I’m getting closer all the time, patching up my mind
Smiling ‘bout these funny friends I find

Getting closer all the time

3. Looking for a Home
(Donnie Rhodes)

If I told you all I feel
Would you say it’s just not real
And don’t deny this part of me
And hide the treasure you’ll never see
And I’m looking for a home

If we rode on the train of time
And if you could see inside my mind
Would you thoughts seem to be in doubt
Would you still stay or do without
And I’m looking for a home

Now I showed you all we feel
Could you still say it’s just not real
If your thoughts seem to be in doubt
Would you still stay or do without
And I’m looking for a home

4. Woodrow
(Johnny Hilton)

Sorrel pony and a little girl
Trotting past the garden wall
Wishin’ kisses and a golden curl
She’s happy ‘cause she’s free to fall

And she’s flying
Into spaces far beyond the time
Yes she’s flying
But her feet are planted like Jackie’s vine
And she’s fine
Yes she’s fine

There’s a lady living down the street
She sings when she sweeps her porch
Walking by she’s quick to greet
And ask you “what you frowning for”

And she’s flying
Into spaces far beyond the time
Yes she’s flying
But her feet are planted like Jackie’s vine
And she’s fine
Yes she’s fine

I love to wander far from home just to see how you been living
But I could never stay away from the place my heart is given.

Going fishing, tea and cinnamon rolls
‘Possum runs ‘cross the road
Corks a bobbing from a new cane pole
It’s a way I found to ease my load

And I’m flying
Into spaces far beyond the time
Yes I’m flying
But my feet are planted like Jackie’s vine
And I’m fine
Yes I’m fine

5. Good Looking Woman
(Johnny Hilton)

Well you’re a good looking woman and you almost fooled me again
You came knocking at my back door saying Johnny ain’t you my old friend
Well baby them days are past and gone
You better realize this thing is at an end

You been talking that jive ‘bout what a fine fine lover I am
Then you turn right around run up the road to your new man
I know I ain’t young as I used to be no
But I’ll find a good woman and do the best I can

Well baby next time I see you hanging ‘round
I’m gonna smile at you and for the first time I won’t cover up no frown
‘Cause I’m though God knows I’m through yeah
Through with this loving keeps on bringing me down

Well you’re a good looking but you’re just another easy lay
Pretty is a pretty does that what my Grandma used to say
You done used me your last time
This thing is over No more delay

6. Tighter
(Donnie Rhodes)

I been thinking about you leaving
And It’s not looking any brighter
If you’ll just return to my side babe
I know we could be so much tighter

Do you remember you said you loved me
Are you gonna stand there and deny it all
The truth just has to be spoke more often
If it’s not our loves gonna tumble and fall

Do you remember you said you loved me
Are you gonna stand there and deny it all
The truth just has to be spoke more often
If it’s not our loves gonna tumble and fall
Tumble and Fall

Well I been thinking about you leaving
And It’s not looking any brighter
If you’ll just return to my side babe
I know we could be so much tighter

7. A Gift For You
(Johnny Hilton)

Some friends give you things they’ve made
And some friends things they buy
But I’m not good at finding gifts
I just that kind a guy
But none the less you mean a lot
You’ve touched my heart in a tender spot
But I’ll find a simple way to make you feel at home
You won’t have to hide behind all those pretty things you own

What I’ll give you don’t cost too much
Midnight smiles that last a while till the morning’s tender touch
Come lay with me we’ll sing harmony
You know I want to say I want to say
I love you Oh say I love you

I’ve heard you like freedom God knows I need mine too
Possession ain’t no feeling and feel is what we do
Just be my friend and I’ll be yours
I’ll share with you all this love I’ve stored

I’ll find a simple way to make you feel at home
You won’t have to hide behind all those pretty things you own

What I’ll give you don’t cost too much
Midnight smiles that last a while like the morning’s tender touch
Come lay with me we’ll sing harmony
You know I want to say I want to say
I love you Oh say I love you
Oh say I love you
Say I love you

8. Never Never Land
(Johnny Hilton)

Come along and fly with me
You know we’ll journey through the sky
Star lit nights on a magic haze
While the mountains twinkle past our eyes

I’m staring through that window pane
And I’m wishing that things weren’t quite so hard to see
I’m growing up and I’m getting old
But I’m trying hard to be a child enjoying all that mystery

Well the sad captain rushes to be late again
He’s afraid to find the time
To sit down and talk to his only friend
And get the dollar off of his mind

I’m talking ‘bout a Never Never Land

We’ll leave behind all the things we know
That make us fuss and fight
Business men forget that golden key
A kind of loving comes into the night

Born in March of ’54
She helps me when no one seem to know the way
We come together now and then
But don’t you know I think of her most everyday

Windy tells the Princess keep your hands away
From the man who holds my heart
We're leaving tomorrow for my Southern home
Where true lovers never part

Could it be a Never Never Land
Never Land Ya'll
Where nobody's lonely
Four and twenty elders
I hope their judgement's fair

Come along and fly with me
You know we'll journey through the sky
Star lit nights on a magic haze
While the mountains twinkle past our eyes

I’m staring through that window pane
And I’m wishing that things weren’t quite so hard to see
I’m growing up and I’m getting old
But I’m trying hard to be a child enjoying all that mystery

Well the sad captain rushes to be late again
He’s afraid to find the time
To sit down and talk to his only friend
And get the dollar off of his mind

Could it be a Never Never Land

9. Baby Bird
(Frank Smoak)

Take my hand little one
and they won’t get to you
But where’s your head anyway
Tripping in this crowded saloon
You’ll be home soon
And doing what you want to do
Well what would your brother say?
He’s knows you will anyway

Sail on Sail on Baby Bird
You are flying through your silver world
Keep on trying flying baby bird
You must know you can’t get me there from here

But I sailed on I never thought I could find a lady like you
You came on strong what else could I do
You know that it’s hard to believe I’m even older than you
Well you’ve got lots to learn but you’ve got the time to learn it

Sail on Sail on Baby Bird
You are flying through your silver world
Keep on trying flying baby bird
You must know you can’t get me there from here

10. Lets Talk Some
(Johnny Hilton)

Well don’t you ever leave me baby
Please don’t you leave me ‘lone
I said well please don’t you leave me baby
Please don’t leave me ‘lone no
If I ever stop this rambling
I just might take you for my own

Turn, turn, turn
Turn the lights up bright
I said well turn, turn, turn, turn
Turn the lights up bright
I want to see every move you’re making
While you bump and hold me tight

11. South Country Boy
(Johnny Hilton)

The curious mind of a South Country Boy

They lay by the fire it takes her away
To front yards and houses and a family someday
But his plans and pleasures don’t flow just like hers
Too long in one place he says is bad on his nerves

You know the curious mind of a south country boy
He’s searching for treasures few can enjoy
Rain on tin roofs sleeping bags all night loving
Moving ‘cross Georgia with a song he’s humming

The shadows that drift in are the curtains drawn tight
Silence sings love songs enchanting the night
The stars in the heavens are like a canopy bed
To hell with the city he stays outside instead

The curious mind of a south country boy
He’s searching for treasures few can enjoy
Rain on tin roofs sleeping bags all night loving
Moving ‘cross Georgia with a song he’s humming

Boxcars and hobo’s they travel no more
The guard stands alone with a light by the door
His Moma tried to warn him but he made up his mind
He lives life for the loving one day at a time

Oh the curious mind of a south country boy
He’s searching for treasures few can enjoy
Rain on tin roofs sleeping bags all night loving
Moving ‘cross Georgia with a song he’s humming

South Country Boy

12. Questions Is
(Johnny Hilton)

Look here James, Look here James
Can’t you see I’m smiling at you
Seems you been too long alone
But soon some girl’s gonna catch you
So come along let’s have a drink
And talk of these good times passing
Laughs deep inside these mirrored halls
Good friends are for the asking

On this bar stool
‘Side this drinking fool
I’m thinking Pisces knew
Garden dreaming after school

Pull the covers from your head
Let the cold floor touch your feet
I smell the coffee brewing
Monday’s here and I must meet
A blond haired girl with silver eyes
About a place to work

Look here James, Look here James
Women used to make me crazy
But the game we play it ain’t the same today
I’m getting closer to my lady
Preaching midnight mass in this barroom class
I hope she hears what I been saying
To a smoke filled cast, aint the drummer fast
Question is just who’ll be staying

On this bar stool
‘Side this drinking fool
I’m thinking Pisces knew
Garden dreaming after school

13. Hoe Cake
(Johnny Hilton)

I want to sing you all a story ‘bout the place that grew my mind
It’ll give you just a little peak inside
Quilt on my bed and like I said that rich dirt was my pride
But I had to leave it just to say I tried
And I’m happy for today, tomorrow’s blind

To see me now you won’t believe that I was once a child
Just a rockin’ on my handsome daddy’s knee
A pitcher pump and a lighter stump and a mule named Dora Lee
They can’t mean the same to you as they do to me
Ain’t a west bound plane a curiousity

‘Cause we had hoe cake in the kitchen and pea vine hay outside
And a dog or two, they loved to auto-ride
All I ever had to do was work off half my hide
But you know they loved me even when I cried
Yes you know they loved me even when I cried

Sat’day evening swimming Moma stops to watch the fun
“You better look out chil’en that river sho’ can run”
When I think of how they raised me it makes me proud to be their son
I can step back now and look and things they’ve done
I hope the best part of their lives has just begun

‘Cause we had hoe cake in the kitchen and pea vine hay outside
And a dog or two, they loved to auto-ride
All I ever had to do was work off half my hide
But you know they loved me even when I cried
Yes you know they loved me even when I cried

14. Fast Boogie
(Frank Smoak)

I may be wrong but I won’t be wrong always now baby
I may be wrong but I won’t be wrong always
I love you darling but I hate your hurting ways

Well that moon looks lonesome shining through the trees now baby
Well that moon looks lonesome shining through those trees
The house feels empty when your baby packs up and leaves

Well I asked my baby for a nickel she gave me a thirteen dollar bill
Asked my baby for a nickel she gave me a thirteen dollar bill
Asked her for a drink a Jack Daniels she gave me a whole liquor still

I’m going home to see my baby
I’m going home to see my baby
I can’t say when but all I can say is maybe

Let me tell you now
My head wasn’t with me when I left that woman last night
That’s right
My head wasn’t with me with I left that lady last night, No
She give me one more chance you know I’m gonna treat her right
