ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A native of Mississippi and double major graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, this veteran artist says it was his grandmother’s love of gospel music, his grandfather’s love for country and blues music, and his daddy’s love of jazz and pop that set his musical interests. Early in life, Howard Lips was immersed in classical training first on the violin and then on the piano before rock and roll spoiled his desire for a classical career. A young man named Elvis Presley from Tupelo, MS, burst on the scene, changing Howard and the world. Now hooked on this new sound, he became passionately obsessed with learning tunes of the day on the piano instead of practicing classical disciplines. As popular music changed, Howard learned the latest hits and played the coffee house circuit, eventually finding his way to California and Doug Weston’s Troubadour in Hollywood. It was this ironic twist of fate that put his thoughts on Nashville. While working at the Troubadour, he discovered that the former members of Buffalo Springfield were huge George Jones fans. The seed was planted and eventually he found his way to Music City.

In Nashville, the Mississippi country-rocker was introduced to Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton at the height of their recording career. He learned the publishing and music production business with Porter Wagoner and multi-Grammy winning engineer Tom Pick. In 2000, on their hit Airways CD and cassette “Headin’ Home,” the Platters sang three of Howard’s songs – “Ridin' On The Mainline,” “Cheer Up My Brother,” and “God Saw The Blood” – Lips was awarded Certified Gold and Multi-platinum RIAA awards to commemorate his contributions to sales in excess of 18 million copies.

Howard’s youth was spent on his grandpa’s farm located in Forrest County, just outside the Hattiesburg, MS, city limits. His maternal grandpa loved country and popular music and he heard Slim Harpo sing “Raining In My Heart” for the first time while riding in his grandpa’s pickup truck. That primitive basic root music became the foundation of Howard’s music.

Peter Bordonali is a Nashville Music Industry Recording veteran who has recorded with such Country Stars as George Jones, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood, George Strait, Shania Twain, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett, and Pop stars such as Joe Cocker, BB King, Marie Osmond, Ann Murray, Olivia Newton John, Bill Medley, Barbara Streisand, Nancy Sinatra, and Wayne Newton. With his legendary guitar, mandolin and bass playing work on this album, he now adds Howard Lips to his list of Country Stars.

“It’s refreshing to hear an artist bring compassion to his music like Howard Lips. He sings with the same compassion as he uses to deliver the Word of God. As his Lay leader and friend I can speak for many of us who get to enjoy this talent each week” (Dale Carnahan, Emergency Management Director, Perry County, Mississippi). “I am proud to know Howard, not only as a Musician, but as our Methodist Minister. He also works with our School through His music and spiritual leadership and the kids really love Brother Lips. I'm honored to be a part of this new CD” (Albert Garner, Mayor, New Augusta, Mississippi). “This album is special to me, you feel like you are there with Howard as he sings his memories and fantasies” (co-producer and legendary 8-time Grammy winner Tom Pick). “Howard’s style is unique and his abilities are second to none. Adonda is proud of Howard Lips – a multi-talented songwriting and singing troubadour” (co-producer Harrison Tyner).

Performing as a single act on stage, Lips plays guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica. An accomplished songwriter, he composes original tunes with his piano. A multi-instrumentalist performer, Lips is well-received in a variety of venues, such as fairs, concert halls, pubs, church events, festivals, and private parties. The music of Howard Lips is rooted in the traditional story-telling style of music performed by Jimmy Rogers, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Neil Diamond. He draws from the deep well of Elvis Presley’s Gospel and Rock & Roll, Robert Johnson’s Delta Blues, and Country Legends Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Sr. and Porter Wagoner. The Mississippi singer-songwriter performs music that spans 50 years of traditional Country, Pop, Rock & Roll, and Country Gospel.
