ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, The Hypsys are an eclectic trio of highly skilled and driven musicians. Formed in early 2007 from members of other local bands, they immediately began writing music they refer to as “progressive-jazz-rock-fusion-soul-funk.” In a short time, they have garnered a reputation for being a very original act. Guitarist and vocalist Bo Hembree, along with bassist David Ray, are studying jazz at the University of Alabama. This influence shows in their originals and in some of their versions of jazz standards that can be heard at their shows. Drummer Paul Oliver is also a music major at the University of Alabama, where he has studied extensively in classical and jazz percussion. This kind of intense study has helped the Hypsys create a truly unique sound.

The Hypsys
One of the most refreshing collections of original work I've heard in quite some time, this album is a must for those who are interested in hearing music that stretches the boundaries of the rock/funk genre. The Hypsys' use of mixed meter and their individual technical prowess as musicians give hope to the listener for the surivival and continued growth of rock/funk, and as the group develops perhaps even the birth of a new genre. Keep it coming guys!
