Amanita Music is a new label dedicated to the pursuit of creative, psychedelic music. For a moment, let us not submit to the very monochromatic, singular, view of psychedelic music, which is a wall of wah-wah, feed back guitar, so called "drug reference lyrics," and "spacey jams" - which help define the time continuum of 1965- 1969, for a particular music called rock and roll. The definition of psychedelic is mind expanding. In order to define psychedelic music properly, you must include artists whose work defies any particular time continuum and offers properties which are truly mind expanding: John Coltrane, Charles Mingus,Thelonious Monk,Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Edgar Varese,Charles Ives, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, LaMonte Young, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Lou Reed, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, The Jojouka Musicians, the list could go on forever! The music on the Amanita label will not be defined by narrow categorizations. The recordings will be varied; from solo piano & percussion to full blown electronic and acoustic ensembles. The priority of the music is to act like a psychedelic agent, that is to open the doors of perception and clean the mirror - to help one question what can or cannot be done. To help reinstate the absolute creative process in music making. It is obvious that the music will not be targeted for a mass audience, but a niche audience exists which will find this music intriguing and enlightening. Amanita Music is independently owned and operated by myself (Joseph Benzola). It is not a label that will be influenced by what is fashionable today, but rather it will be governed by what is timeless and stimulating forever. If the above sounds pretentious and naive, so be it. I could not be anymore serious in my quest. To help you hear all the music, each tape will be meticulously produced and recorded. Though it is certainly a low budget operation as compared to Sony, I feel that the sound rivals that of many recordings that are produced today, at a much greater cost. The recording times will also be generous; most tapes will have at least 50 minutes of music. The music on these tapes is of the highest caliber. They offer a refreshing perspective to a very tired music scene which bases success on singular values such as units sold and profit. They are not easy listening; it is not music which sends "the ears on vacation" - but hopefully, if you listen you will be transported to places seldom ventured. "It is time for the artist to regain absolute control of his/her work. The dictates of corporate AMERIKA are not working. The artist is the only one who understands the creative process...IT is a matter of life and death. To regain the soul is to regain true wealth. The Revolution Has Begun..."
