ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A Tale of a Potato

Sometime ago I was in the check-out line at a local grocery near the University of Victoria (UVic). The lad in front of me, obviously a UVic student, was buying a single potato. I assumed that this student must be at the end of his finances, and a lonely potato was that all he could afford. After leaving the store, I tried to find him but he was gone. I have never forgotten this incident.

Fast forward to 2011

While having a drink with my friend Jim Crawford, he asked me if I had any musical projects I was working on. I mentioned that something I had wanted to do for decades was a recording of beautiful ballads, accompanied by strings. Jim took this wish of mine to heart, and with the help of Tony Gage and several other wonderful contributors, “Ten Mile Music Productions
LP” was formed, and my project was a ‘go’!

Both Jim and Tony are ardent supporters of the fine arts, so when I told them my “Tale of a Potato” , they brought up the idea that created the mandate for the “Ten Mile LP”, and that is to set aside a significant portion of the proceeds to support needy students in Fine Arts programs across Canada. Such contributions would begin upon the sale of the first CD and continue thereafter.

About the Music

Given all of the beautiful songs written between 1926 (Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch over Me’,the oldest on this recording), and 1961 ( Mancini’s “Moon River”, the newest), you could make hundreds of CDs and never repeat a single tune. These fourteen are only a very small sampling of the repertoire, and they have all been recorded by the very best, from Bing Crosby and Gertrude Lawrence to Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, et al.

I hope that you will enjoy this CD. We have recorded it in a ‘swing ballad’ style – reminiscent of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. For those of you with hair the same colour as mine (white!), I have a feeling that this music will bring back fond memories.

Sincerely,
Ian McDougall
P.S…if you feel like dancing, be my guest!
