ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A choral work that calls to a spectrum of religious and ethnic experience.

Originally commissioned for Australia’s Centenary of Federation, Prayer Bells comprises 21 prayers for three solo cantors, eight male voices and a set of specially cast quarter-tone bells.

The ethereal notes of the bells perfectly span the Greek, Latin and Hebrew chant traditions intoned by the soloists. Opera Opera’s Kirk Hume describes the effect as “intriguing and compelling – the sounds ascending like spirits into the darkness of the church’s high vaulted ceilings”.

Likening cantor Petros Kyriakou to a Greek Harry Dean Stanton, Hume praises him as a “true vocal magician”, while Hebrew cantor Peretta Anggerek sings “with elegance and power”.

Following performances throughout Australia, Prayer Bells will have its American premiere at the Chicago Cultural Center on 23 October 2009.

Constantine Koukias is the co-founder and artistic director of IHOS Music Theatre & Opera. IHOS has produced five large scale operas composed and directed by Koukias: Days and Nights with Christ, To Traverse Water, MIKROVION: Small Life 36 Images in a Phantom Flux of Life, and The Divine Kiss and Tesla - Lightning in His Hand in 2003.

He is well known for his innovative work in contemporary opera and other forms. In 1993 he was commissioned by the Sydney Opera House Trust in association with REM Theatre to compose Icon, a large-scale music theatre piece for the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House.

In 1995 he composed and directed Medea for the State Theatre of South Australia. In 1997 his Incantation II for soprano and digital delay won the International Valentino Bucchi Vocal Prize in Rome and in 2004 he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship.

His work Prayer Bells - Pentekostarion, which draws on traditions of religious chant, was premiered at the Melbourne Federation Festival in 2001.

Music theatre works include Orfeo, Rapture - Sonic Taxi Performance, Schwa – The Neutral Vowel, Antigone and The Da Ponte Project. Constantine has been the recipient of numerous international commissions and awards. Within a Prayer at Lamplighting was commissioned by the China National Symphony Orchestra Australian Tour, to commemorate thirty years of diplomatic ties with China.

His design credits include the internationally acclaimed Odyssey and Medea. He is currently working his new large scale opera about eminent Tasmanian wilderness photographer Olegas Truchanas.
