Dark and quirky. The phrase aptly captures the essence of I Hate This Place's sophomore album Diversions. A new collaboration between keyboardist Sean Nerney and vocalist Erin Han, Diversions explores the more sinister side of the human psyche, the place that lies just beneath the bubblegum surface of 2004's "One Minute Mayhem". A world in which good and evil are the same, where the characters you meet are as funny as they are deadly, and as insanely happy as they are miserable. Sean's brooding synth textures and intricately crafted rhythms are a perfect match for Erin's haunting and powerful voice, while the lyrics of the songs they write evoke memories of a place we all know but have never crossed over to. A small white cat offers his paw. Will you take it...?

A darker side of pop
Sean does it again! This album is a bit quirkier and darker than "One Minute Mayhem," and has some beautiful tracks featuring Erin Han's amazing vocals and songwriting. This album has a really powerful feel to it - the lyrics are evocative, and the music itself ranges from beautiful simple melodies (loveletters, siren) to deranged clever thought-provokers (spider song) to nearly symphonic masterpieces (drowning in reverse)! Buy the album so the duo can make a third one - and then we'll see how deep and how far they'll go...

No second album slump here
With the exception of "The Marvelous Mechanical Fish", this album sounds almost completely different from I Hate This Place's first CD, One Minute Mayhem. These songs have taken a dark turn; even the quirky "Spider Song" is about as different from "Deep Sea Love" or "Inigo! The Space Cat" as night from day.

The album is a mixture of electronic orchestration and emotional lyrics, complimented by the voice of Erin Han, who is a more than welcome addition to the band. Each of the songs is crafted to create its own mood and atmosphere. This CD proves that the band is capable of many surprises, and I will definitely be awaiting a third album.
