Who Knows

by Island Jazz Quintet

Original vocal and instrumental material mixed with jazz standard repertory. California cool trumpet, smoldering female vocal, and a cooking rhythm section capture the senses while the arteries unclog immediately.

Album Notes
Island Jazz Quintet released the third album, “Who knows,” to a standing–room-only crowd at the Crepe de Paris in downtown Seattle. Like the band's first two albums, this disc received national and international airplay and wide critical acclaim. Additionally, "Who Knows" won a West Coast Songwriters award, while Just Call Adrienne is featured in "Looking for Lenny," a soon-to-be released documentary on the life of Lenny Bruce.

Some comments on this album by others:

Laird’s title track is swinging, shuffle jazz reminiscent of ‘50’s grooves a la Art Blakey, with original and engaging lyrics. -Taxi

You guys have really hit your stride. I know by the fact that the originals are the best. "Bluelike" and "Just Call Adrienne" could be right out of the Messengers playlist. -Voice of Vashon Radio

Just Listen to the personal touches and humor the band adds to "What A Little Moonlight Can Do," to see that this is a group that should be selling out shows all across the country. -Victory Review

Check our website for upcoming shows and visit us on Facebook. We're planning our second annual mini-tour of the Northwest around Labor Day. So...folks in Portland, Eugene, and Vancouver, we look forward to more fun in 2012!

Also check out IJQ's first two albums, "Youkali," and the self-titled premier release. Jerome Wilson of Cadence Magazine wrote, "Youkali" is a French-Arabian tango sung and played with sensual zest, with Laird showing a good command of French and Person really smearing his trumpet..This group is obviously growing fast and its future progress should be interesting." "This quintet would be right at home in a New York cabaret."-Victory Review.

Sultry stylings and tight musicianship A+
The sultry stylings, fascinating variety, and tight musicianship of the Island Jazz Quintets new release make this cd yet another remarkable achievement. Starting right out of the gate with their interpretation of the cover 1-Where is Love-, the band delves into some freeform jazz licks with a laidback groove. Moving on to track 4-Big Tom-, makes one want to don their "zoot Suit" and try out the dance floor to the rythmic drumbeat and hoppin' horn! Track 8-So Many Stars-, glides and flows with a smooth Latin styling and track 10-Just Call Adrienne, changes up with some strong solos and impeccable arrangements. Excellent and entertaining jazz!

A clean, cool and edgy ensemble of world class quality
"Who knows'" the latest CD from Island Jazz Quintet,
continues to please the sophisticated ear with clear, clean lines: the smooth connected themes are spiced with rapid fire riffs from any one of the independent and highly skilled musicians who make up this eclectic and exciting group. Laird is most notable for her ability to mold a tune with sensual word color, and her vocalism is always perfectly in tune, a rarity in this genre.

This listener appreciates the melodies fused with new ideas which develop as they go, but don't get lost in improvisation. The genius is not in playing every chromatic alteration of the scale but in keeping the listener fascinated and connected to the action. Art, not virtuosity, is what the soul craves.

Far from the cacophony of muddled improv, Vashon Island has produced a clean, cool and edgy jazz ensemble of world class quality..

Unique style, great for a drive to work
First I want to say this is the first music review I've ever felt like writing. I enjoy all types of Jazz music as an amateur listener. This group simply lets you love music. Secondly, I would like to praise public radio (University of North Texas KNTU Jazz 88.1). Without public radio, I would not have heard of this group. Keep up the good work.

I always enjoy these guys. They're full of talent and surprises. Maggie Laird is definitely magical. Have a listen!
