ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
World Music Central called ILGI "stylish and energetic" and its sound "smart and savvy" in its album review. "ILGI is part and parcel of a fresh wave of contemporary folk that offers a fresh and fanciful slant to traditional music." Rootsworld found ILGI a "little crunchier on this release than in the past, with grinding fiddles, wailing pipes, more assertive drumming, and thrashier guitars" without losing "the ethereal side that made earlier releases so appealing." fRoots gave it a thumbs up as it dubbed ILGI "Latvia's leading roots band."

"Isakas nakts dziesmas" ("Songs of the Shortest Night") is ILGI's 12th album. The shortest night is at the summer solstice, celebrated as "Jani" in Latvia. ILGI depicts traditional preparations and festivities from dusk until dawn through Latvian folk songs arranged in the band's postfolk style. The result is simultaneously ancient and modern.
