In Opposition To Our Acceleration

Die Stadt CD DS32

Illusion Of Safety intrepidly charts the terra incognita where sound,
silence, noise and music intersect. Using conventional instruments, sound
generating devices and random objects, IOS hews sonic sculptures that
deliberately provoke, mesmerize and even affront listeners.

"In Opposition To Our Acceleration", the latest offering from this project is a provocative 74 minute blend of ambient & improv. Using electronic synthesis, computer manipulation, musical references, manipulated instruments, amplified objects and subtle use of location recordings these primarily live pieces provide ambience as the term is truly defined- "the distinctive atmosphere surrounding or suffusing a person, place or thing".

This is the 14th full length IOS cd release beginning with "Historical" (Staalplaat, 1991). Their work is hard to classify, often being called schizophrenic, due to the shifting nature of each composition, release, & performance. This CD however contains no unwelcome surprise attacks, no abrupt shifts in character, and no abrasive passages. Gentle textures, subtle ambience, & found sounds that may be describred as uneasy beauty permeate these 8 unreleased live tracks (from 1996, 1997, 2001), and single studio composition "Stillpoint" (2001), as featured on the Wiretapper 7 CD.

Falling somehwere in similarity to their previous releases "Of & The" (Soleilmoon, 1997), and the first "Mort Aux Vauches" (Staalplaat, 1996), this disc is 9 distinct tracks that display a sense of balance in composition and melodic abstraction, unusual for improvised electronics. Although the overall subtlety is not the usual IOS ouvre, the juxtaposition of tension & darkness against beauty & mystery is as familiar as last nights half forgotten dreams.

Referencing external & enhancing internal locations, manipulating semi-recognizable elements in structures of a re-arranged language of error. Destroyed music, broken sound, disturbed ambience, and the quest for the sublime.

Released in an oversize folio including 6 double sided postcards featuring the abstract, unmanipulated photography of IOS founding member Dan Burke.
