One night in Dublin, whilst contemplating the 11.3.11 tragedy in Japan, Triona Marshall, harpist with The Chieftains, conceived an idea that over many months, would become 'The Midori Suite'. Triona has played all over the world and has seen first hand the power of music to help millions of people in many profound ways. The idea was to harness this feeling of wanting to do something, with the power of music to try to help those that need it most.

As our idea began to crystalise, the story of the Midori no Tohoku Genki Program came to our attention. This charity provides a summer camp retreat for children who have suffered post-traumatic stress as a result of the tragedy. It is almost impossible to conceptualise their pain but very often, music has a healing effect in a way all of its own.

Triona, Charlie and Martin met in Dublin to contemplate the task. Immediately, fragments of tunes and arrangements began to emerge that would eventually become refined into our expression. This expression took on a life and journey of its own as it developed into three movements marking the presence of, and transition between: sorrow, healing and joy.

The first movement is a duet between shakuhatchi and tin-whistle – featuring fragments of motifs from both Japan and Ireland; which after their initial statements, become set together in solidarity. This then extends into a march which is led and interwoven with satsuma biwa and ancient Japanese vocals as symbol of moving forward in unity.

The second movement recalls the old Irish harp music where primarily, music was composed to honour someone respected by the musicians. The song, we regard as an anthem with the very simple message of 'may peace be yours tonight'.

The third movement contains three dance tunes: the hop jig, the double jig and the reel which symbolises the joy of children playing as is the mission of the Midori no Tohoku Genki Program .

We affirm a belief in the possibility of this transition. Upon hearing of the project, many of Ireland's most revered artists offered their time and talents to express this affirmation of possibility. We are hoping that you will buy this track; the proceeds of which go directly to the Midori no Tohoku Genki Camp . Also, we want to spread the word of the important work they are doing in Japan. As can be seen in Japan and Ireland, great things can happen when communities come together, we hope that this offering will both help and inspire and that you will join us in the message 'may peace be yours tonight.'

Special Thanks to all musicians who participated in this project also thanks to Pauline Sheerin for all her hard work and also Frances Marshall for her beautiful cover design
