Album Notes
Spinout Records ( invited folks from the Cuyuna, Mesabi and Gogebic Iron Range areas to help record a new compilation called IRON COUNTRY. Over the past year, pickers and grinners from the region congregated at Sacred Heart Studio ( Located in a de-sanctified cathedral in the iron-shipping hub of Duluth, inspiration was drawn from the studio's view of ships arriving and departing the oar docks that line the harbor on Lake Superior.

Iron mining's constant reminders are ever-present with huge tailing piles, floating oar boats and long trains spilling oar pellets as they roll through the woods. The artists on this record grew up surrounded by mining while they shoveled snow, cut wood, picked berries and partied in the pits. And they watched the mines falter and change the way the area felt about itself. Those feelings and experiences come out in their music and give us feeling for one of America's most sustaining cultures; Iron Mining.

Duluth artist Chris Monroe created the cover art. Chris also drew the covers for Spinout Records' Duluth Does Dylan (2000) and Chilly Northern Women (2002) compilations. As well as being a respected fine artist, her comics are featured in the Minneapolis Star Tribune - Free Time and Duluth's Ripsaw News. Ripsaw News contributor and UMD professor Chris Godsey wrote the liner notes.
