Album Notes
Self-released through their own Six Corner Records, Irving Artists functions as a chamber group with a ‘flexible format’. On Irving, there are moments where Nagahata and Muhly duet, and others where they display their virtuosity as soloists, such as Cassado’s Suites prelude for solo cello, or Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in D Major, Op. 17 No 4 for solo piano.
A moment where the two particularly shine together is on a rare recording of J.S. Bach’s Viola da Gamba Sonata. The piece is rarely performed in modern contexts, with few recordings existing by other artists. Here, Nagahata and Muhly take the chance to open their album by archiving an important work, setting the tone for their carefully curated set.

The pair is also joined by clarinetist Heather Thon Dahl on the Keith Murphy arrangement of the traditional Shaker Song Simple Gifts. Murphy, a faculty member of Loyola University, wrote his Simple Gifts arrangement for a special ‘Folk Inspiration’ concert. An audience favorite, this arrangement exudes a rustic vibe, and brings a fresh interpretation to the standard.
