ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
During the course of their nine year run from 1977-1986, New York based “Iskra” was one of the most popular and influential Ukrainian dance bands in North America. Traveling coast to coast across the United States and Canada, “Iskra” consistently filled dance halls and festival venues everywhere between New York and Los Angeles in the U.S., and Montreal and Edmonton north of the border. Their extensive and eclectic repertoire drew from the deep well of Ukrainian folklore, pop hits and standards by Ukrainian songwriters, as well as original compositions by the band members.

Released in 1983, the EP “A Journey Through Ukraine” (Ukrainian translation: “Mandrivka Po Ukrayini”), was “Iskra’s” final studio recording, and in some ways, the band’s most ambitious recording project. “Iskra” takes its listeners on a musical journey through the various regions of Ukraine. Original narration describes each of the regions, highlighted by music typical or evocative of the region in question. The musical journey occurs in two continuous parts, corresponding to the two sides of the EP. Oles Kuzyszyn’s original composition “Vkrayino Moya Charivna” (“My Enchanting Ukraine”) serves as the opening and closing theme for the project. “A Journey Through Ukraine” was premiered live in July 1983, during “Iskra’s” concert appearance at the Ukrainian Youth Festival in Glen Spey, NY.

“Iskra” was Oles Bundziak (bass guitar), Bohdan Kuzyszyn (drums, vocals), Oles Kuzyszyn (keyboards, guitar, vocals) and Jaroslaw Palylyk (keyboards, accordion, vocals). The EP was originally engineered by Mark Sydorak and Richard Nagle, and mixed by Richard Nagle at ElectroNova Productions. This digital re-issue was remastered by Slau Halatyn at BeSharp Studios, and is dedicated to the memory of our bandmate Oles Bundziak (1959-2010).
