Djigui

by Issa Coulibaly

Traditional, exuberant, West African music featuring the djembe, a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands. The Bambara name 'djembe' comes from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé" which translates to "everyone gather together in peace."

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Master Djembe Drummer Issa Coulibaly began studying the djembe and dun dun when he was 11 in his home city of Bamako, Mali. As his skill and reputation as a multi-instumental player, vocalist and arranger grew, Issa toured Africa and Europe extensively as a member of troupe Koume Djosse and Nahawa before emigrating to America. He continues to travel from Maine to Puerto Rico, facilitating retreats and performing as the lead drummer and Musical Director for a variety of African Dance troupes.

As Djembe Master Drummer for Crocodile River Music, Issa Coulibaly is a dynamic and key performer in their workshops, school residencies, and drum circles, providing educational entertainment and lessons to audiences of all ages and skill levels.
Issa's CD debut 'Foliba' highlights his flamboyant playing style, original arrangements of traditional songs, and amply demonstrates his solid vocal skill. His follow-up 'Djigui' is expected to release summer 2019.
