Mary Ellen Thompson covered the 5,000 acres of Hunting Island.
Thompson, who writes for Beaufort Lifestyle magazine, partnered with zoologist Steve Danko.
"I see Hunting Island State Park as an adventure all on its own," she said. "Steve constantly challenged my research. We were talking about how the blue crabs like to eat the periwinkle snails, so the snails crawl up the spartina grass out of reach of the crabs. Interesting fact, isn't it? But that's not the end of it. Steve asked me to elaborate on the relationship and I had no idea -- back to research. It turns out that if left unchecked by the blue crabs, the periwinkle snails will decimate the spartina grass."

Ron Daise, the actor, author and educator, is the project narrator. "I weave together the voice-over recordings about Penn Center, Fort Fremont, Hunting Island and sites along the way. A native St. Helenian, even I learned a thing or two. Listeners, I'm sure, will enjoy the journey and listening to the stories. They may find themselves wanting to drive the same roadways again and again."

Margaret Evans, whose creative work can be seen on stages in Beaufort and on the pages of the Lowcountry Weekly, narrated the Hunting Island guide. "Mary Ellen Thompson did all the heavy lifting, writing a script that was incredibly thorough and detailed," Evans said. "All I had to do was show up at the St. Helena library and hang out with two fun guys -- Burton Sauls and Bruce Doneff -- and read into a microphone about one of my favorite places in the world. They were both extremely professional, but we had a blast. Lots of hard work, but plenty of laughter in that sound booth too."

The iTours will accomplish more than bringing together artists.

"We were looking for a way to increase traffic at Hunting Island. More admission fees equal more improvements to the park," said Dick Geier of the Friends of Hunting Island. "We partnered with Penn Center and Fort Fremont to put together a package to cause people to spend more time here. That will help the hotels and shops and restaurants. The production that Burton did with sounds effects and voices tells a story that people will pass along."
