Album Notes
I've been writing since my teens, and played in Greenmantle in the mid 70's. We split and until the 90's I didn't play much. An opportunity to do a short tour of Canada and some gigs in the States fired me up again. Got back with Billy to do Greenmantle's first cd - Two Hats, and had a bunch of songs still waiting to be done.
So I thought, wouldn't it be great to get together with some of the guys I first played with in Clydebank High School all those years ago and see if we could do something with the songs. It worked! In fact it felt as though we had never gone our separate ways.
Take A Second Glance was recorded at Red Eye studios in Clydebank with George Burton as the producer. George had already worked with me on the Greenmantle cd, so it was easy to do another.
The songs are all drawn from my experience, not necessarily personal, but could be observational or emotional. But that's the beauty and challenge of songwriting. I didn't want to settle on any particular style, rather let the songs do what they told me was needed. And of course the others made their own unique contribution, so everyone involved in the music had a chance to interpret what they got from the songs. I think this makes it an interesting and varied listening experience.
Robert Henderson did the artwork and it was him who helped me come up with the title. Robert likes to take images which challenge; which cause you to look again. The music was played by guys who hadn't been together for a long time. We're all in our 60's, retired and love playing. I think the music is full of the same energy and vitality we had in our youth, without the angst.
So Take A Second Glance seemed like a good title.
Its honest, straightforward music, played with soul and energy. We had a ball making it and I think that comes over.
There's a couple of hidden pieces as well, just for the fun of it.
