Album Notes
"once upon a differerent time" is my 10th
solo release, the 8th in collaboration with
producer jono manson. thanks in part to
you kind folks, our previous endevour,
2013’s benefit covers album, "unknown
blessings", was a great success, raising
thousands of dollars to help at need kids
through the kerrville folk foundation’s
music camp for teens.
we thank you!

the new album is 11 original songs, most
of ‘em new, all newly recorded. i’m joined
by the usual santa fe suspects and some
wonderful guest artists from here and
across the sea. trust me, big fun was had...

Track Notes
track 1 - once upon a different time
i was on tour in alaska and was taking a
walk on a magically quiet deserted beach
when a crow landed in front of me. i
later found out that in certain species,
murders of crows will migrate south for the
long winter leaving one or two members
behind to guard the homestead.
finger picked midtempo with band
featuring melissa greener & david berkeley

track 2 - warming
on this song i manage to include concerns
about climate change & income inequality,
reflections on the collapse of the ottoman
empire at the end of world war I, some
hopes for the future and a pineapple joke.
travis picked folkie tempo with a small
combo including New Orleans horns

track 3 - no paddle wheel
cowritten with my dog sam while on our
morning walk...despite my tendency to see
most glasses as half empty, by the end of
the song i have to admit that me and sam,
we’re a couple of lucky dogs indeed.
finger picked midtempo with a small

track 4 - crazy for me
this is a straight up love song written for my
wife...it features harmonies by melissa
greener and david berkeley plus piano and
violin played by jason crosby (who performs
with both phil lesh and bob weir in their
solo bands).
ballad with small combo

track 5 - somewhere like italy
this song was inspired by both a painting of
a crumbling old farmhouse in tuscany by my
friend, canadian artist philip buller, and fond
memories of my italian great grandmother,
philmena vennucci, who came to the US in
the late 1800’s...it features additional lyrics
sung in a counter melody by italian
singer songwriter stefano barotti.
finger picked upbeat tempo with a small

track 6 - a little more
the basic tracks for this tune were recorded
in italy and feature an italian backup band...
overdubs were later added featuring lead
guitar by kevin trainor (5 chinese brothers)
and vocal harmonies by the winstons.
finger picked midtempo with band

track 7 - steal light
this song imagines a conversation between
god and the devil, although it’s not always
clear just who is saying what...
uptempo bluesy shuffle with band featuring
rockin’ electric piano from jason crosby

track 8 - circling around
this one was partially inspired by friends
dealing with serious flooding in colorado
and texas...it’s sort of a cousin to john
lennon’s comment that “life is what happens
while you’re busy making other plans.”
uptempo fingerpicking with small combo

track 9 - the heat
this song revisits the homeless hero of my
song (i am only) what i am...he is now an old
man wandering the beaches of southern
california awash in memory and lost love.
slow 6/8 texas waltz with band

track 10 - winter song
one christmas season i watched a young
boy of about 7 spinning in circles on the
santa fe plaza, blurring the lights, all the
while singing along at the top of his lungs
to the piped in christmas music ...he knew
every word...it was as if these songs were
embedded in his DNA.
uptempo with a band

track 11 - singing for my supper
the story of my musical life told in 2
minutes and 35 seconds.
bluegrassy uptempo with band
