Album Notes
Sugar Moon is subtitled "Swing and Blues Party" because it is a group of experienced musicians playing live in the studio with minimal overdubbing. Stand up bass, mandolin, guitar and leader James Clem who has been a musician for over thirty years. James is primarily known for his blues finger picking and slide guitar but in addition to being a fine singer he has become known world wide as an expert ukulele player playing in a vintage swing and blues based style.
This all analog recording CD was a long term project that James and co-producer Ron Rogers came up with to try and get the feel that classic labels like Sun and Chess got on their recordings. That is, players interacting with one another live and not putting together a song bit by bit by overdubbing and getting a boring track that may not have any mistakes but puts the listener to sleep. For this session we used a crack rhythm section of Craig Snazelle on stand up bass and Ken West on mandolin and guitar.
Special guests include Mary Flower doing a great vocal duet with James on "Swing, Brother, Swing" while Mary also adds some sizzling guitar. Mary's CD "When My Bluebird Sings" was named one of the best CD's of 2014 by Downbeat Magazine. New Orleans sax legend Reggie Houston plays some smokin' sax on two tracks.
Sugar Moon is a fine mix of western swing, ragtime, blues, and some tin pan alley era tunes all played by musicians who have lots of experience playing these styles. Add the warmth of the analog recording and the carefully crafted arrangements and this is a recording that you will come back to again and again.
