Album Notes
The clean simplicity of the cover of "Voice and Guitar" speaks to the elegant approach taken in presenting the musical contents. Unadorned and direct, allowing the songs to stand on their own merit without distraction. Recorded and produced by James Hurley, mixed by Michael James (New Radicals, Robben Ford, A.J. Croce) and Matt Forger (Michael Jackson, Simon Lynge), and mastered by David Donnelly (Aerosmith, Nelly Furtado, Journey), this is an album that celebrates the essence of the song.

Includes three songs from past albums as well as material written expressly with this recording in mind. Of the songs from prior albums, two; "Mountain" and "Walk Away", were originally recorded in a fully-produced band context, the third, "Whisper", in a fairly stripped down manner. But all three have evolved as solo arrangements through years of performance. So they, along with every other song on this album, are presented in exactly the same intimate manner audiences hear them at shows; nothing but Voice & Guitar.

Oh, to be James Hurley. When we learn any instrument, the ideal fantasy is to be a completely self-contained ball of talent. Right? Most of us have to compromise on that vision along the way; we're forced to add all these gimmicks: drums, piano, autocorrect. James Hurley will never have to worry about that. He's got it all. He could play a stadium with just his guitar and original songs. That's quite a trick. Don't let the humble, low-key CD artwork fool you--Voice and Guitar is as sophisticated and rich as it gets. This album is deadly good.

This collection of songs is an amazing ride through some of the most listenable music I have heard in years. James Hurley captures moments in time like no one else. I can feel each song as a separate place in my heart, a road I've traveled too. This is a masterpiece from the power of Mountain to the levity of Got to thinkin to the deeply felt Goodbye rain, all songs are moving. A must have CD from a true artistic talent. Thank you James Hurley for the great work you have done here.
