Album Notes
The experimental collective combines free jazz improvisation with Afro-Latin
folkloric idioms to explore different facets of the African Diaspora in the Americas. This is a live recording of a performance that took place on April 7, 2017 at Constellation Chicago. the recording engineer was David Zuchowski.

Proyecto Libre made their debut that December at the Afro-Caribbean Improvised Music Festival in Chicago. Initially a quartet comprised of Sanders’ violin, drummer Ra, bassist Joshua Abrams and Conjunto percussionist Jean-Christophe Leroy, the unit has continued to evolve. All four musicians continue to perform together, but the musical universe has expanded at times to include bassist & cellist Harrison Bankhead, saxophonist Edward Wilkerson Jr., drummer Michael Zarang and percussionist Bobby Delgado. Their last performance prior to this recording was on the Von Freeman Stage at the Chicago Jazz Festival in September 2016.

This Constellation performance will feature a quintet consisting of Sanders, Ra, Bankhead, Leroy and Wilkerson. “We’ve been together long enough now that we’ve developed a common language as a band. Avreaayl has a completely unique sound, but when he gets locked in with Jean’s congas, a brand new thing emerges. Harrison is incredibly adept at adding a voice that works equally with both. And, of course, having a musical conversation with Ed Wilkerson is always a pleasure.”

James Sanders began violin studies at the age of 7, culminating in a Masters Degree in performance from Yale University. An admirer of Stéphane Grappelli, he began improvising shortly after completing his formal study, forming his first jazz group in 1990. He has performed worldwide as both a leader and collaborator, including major festivals in Poland, Italy, Brazil, France and the United States.
