Album Notes
Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians these words, “Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ever since then, the Church has produced hymns of profound beauty combined with deep theological truth. As a musician, arranger, and composer, I hope that these hymns speak to you as you reflect on the words and melodies. They range from the earliest text of the Sanctus found in Isaiah 6:1-5 (“Holy, Holy, Holy”), to classics by Isaac Watts (“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”) and John Newton (“Amazing Grace”), to newer selections composed by Jean Sibelius (“Be Still My Soul”) and Bill Gaither (“There’s Something About That Name”). Each has a unique history of its own.

I must thank my talented friend and colleague Arunesh Nadgir, who makes the piano sing on this recording. An accomplished teacher and performer, he is an Assistant Professor of Piano at Middle Tennessee State University.

Also, I’m grateful to Pam Morse, pianist at First Baptist Church of Reedsburg, WI (and also my mother-in-law!), who has faithfully played these arrangements for years in worship services. Thank you to my entire family for their unflagging support of this music.

This recording is dedicated to the memory of my late grandmother, Nora Barthel, who passed away on the day that we began recording. Like a garden, her life bore fruit literally and figuratively through her family of 7 children and the fruit farm she and my grandfather, Armin Barthel, operated. I believe she is now truly “In the Garden”, walking and talking with Him.
