ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Listed on CD Baby’s “Top Albums” list in 2008 & 2009 and favorably reviewed in past Dance Magazine issues, San Francisco Ballet pianist Jamie Narushchen unveils his new, 51-track ballet class CD of original music that is a must-have this fall!

About Narushchen Sunrise: Best Original Music From His Morning Ballet Classes:

Before he starts his day at SF Ballet, Jamie Narushchen rises early to play and improvise music for a morning ballet class at a nearby dance studio. Known for his vast harmonic vocabulary and punchy rhythms, it’s no surprise that Narushchen produced another 51 tracks in less than a year. Whether it’s exercises that roll on ragtime syncopation or harmonies that echo Ravel and Bill Evans, Narushchen Sunrise offers some of Jamie’s most spirited improvisations that were captured live during the recording.

Notes: Exercises are printed on the back of the case and on its one-page CD insert. A Hamburg Steinway concert grand piano was used during the recording.

About The Musician:

Jamie Narushchen was born and raised in Minneapolis and began studying piano with his grandmother at age six. He studied piano performance at Johns Hopkins' Peabody Conservatory, and he joined The San Francisco Ballet as an accompanist shortly after moving out west. His strong interest in improvisation led him to take additional coursework in composition at The San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Throughout his twenty-four years at SF Ballet, he has regularly provided accompaniment for the West Coast auditions held by The American Ballet Theatre, The Julliard School, The Boston Ballet and others. He also enjoys the opportunity to play for Mark Morris's and Suzanne Farrell's classes when they visit the Bay Area. When he's not playing the piano, he's usually at home playing with his kids.

I found this CD, like all of Jamie's CD's, to be excellent! He has such a variation in tempo, style and musical emphaisis, it's easy to find just what you need to teach class. He carefully codes the selections, so you know just when/how to use it. He chooses tempos carefully, and even gives you mutiple choices, like slow and fast tondues for instance. The quality of his playing is outstanding. He has a soulful quality to his work, and he seems to sense the way a dancer might move. Clearly this comes from a vast experience in playing for dances classes over a long period. His talent and experience pay off on this album, and it's sure to please even the most descriminating dance teacher. Bravo Jamie!

Former Dancer/Ballet Teacher
Music to me as a dancer and teacher is SO incredibly important and I am always so happy to have such beautiful and inspired music and melodies in hopes of inspiring my students to really "listen", "appreciate" and start to dance with the music and not just "to counts!" I think this CD is really wonderful and I love having so many different selections and tempos to work with in class! Thank you Jamie for "Narushchen Sunrise" (and also "After Hours!" I love this one as well!)
and I look forward to your next one!!!!!

Beautiful music
His choices for class are always sophisticated, tasteful, elegant, and beautifully played. It's always such a pleasure when he plays for us. We are lucky to have him, because it makes class really special frankly.
