by Jane McNamee

New Carrickfergus version of the well known traditional song. Original top quality mix. Does the song title ‘Carrickfergus’ refer to the County Antrim town? The answer to that age old question would appear to be yes. The tune first emerged in Country Clare, in the early eighteenth century and later in County Cork, under different titles (‘There Was A Noble Woman’ and ‘My Sick Lover’). It is now believed that the ‘Carrickfergus’ lines were added by northern sailors, who sang them to the tune they became familiar with, as they sailed between Carrickfergus and Cork, delivering Ulster linen. Beautifully sung by one of the finest female singers Ireland has ever produced, Jane McNamee from County Offaly, these new lyrics are an attempt to finally ‘tie’ the song to the historical town which shares it’s name. Carrickfergus Borough Council have given it some recognition by creating a video around this recording. The video can be seen on the town’s website.
