Album Notes

Janet Grice is one of few to play Brazilian jazz on the bassoon. Though she’s lived in New York for over 35 years, her musical soul resides in Rio de Janeiro. She began playing Brazilian music in high school, and frequent trips to Brazil resulted in numerous recordings, gigs and teaching opportunities. With a doctoral dissertation in Brazilian bassoon music, she is an expert in both classical and popular music. Playing jazz bassoon led to gigs with Nana Vasconcelos, Paulo Moura, Don Cherry, Butch Morris and Karl Berger, and recordings for her own label and with many jazz artists. Her bands played in Brazil, Europe, and USA venues such as SOB’s, Boston’s Jazz Boat, Jazz Forum Arts, Lake George Jazz Festival and Celebrate Brooklyn.

Paulo Siqueira studied bassoon with Janet at the Festival de Música de Londrina in Brazil, and earned a Masters Degree with a graduate fellowship at Columbus State U. (GA). Born and raised in the state of São Paulo, he also plays saxophone, flute and drums, and played with orchestras in Brazil, and with artists such as Egberto Gismonti, Emilio Santiago and Nanny Assis.
