ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
THE INFINITE DARK travels the land of fairy tale with one of the genre’s masters. Author and poet Jane Yolen, often called America’s Hans Christian Andersen, holds two Nebula Awards and was named the 2017 Grand Master of Science Fiction and Fantasy by the Science Fiction Writers of America. She also celebrates the publication of her 365th book this year (2018).

Jane collaborates with acoustic trio 3 Ravens (Lui Collins, Max Cohen & Donna Hébert), who bring her poetry to life in a collection of readings, songs, and instrumentals. Lui, Max and Donna sing lead and harmony, with Max’s guitar interweaving songs with spoken-word tracks throughout. Donna’s lush fiddle invokes the Celtic magic in the tales. Lui’s piano, tenor ukulele, and banjo add musical texture to the story, while her clear and lovely soprano voice takes the listener deep into the songs.

A seven-track suite about shapeshifting Selkies and mermaids adds the voice of Molly Hebert-Wilson and the whistle of Sarah Bauhan. Later tracks delve into darker European folklore, coming face to face with the all-too-human penchant for inhumanity. Jane’s new twist on old tales blends seamlessly with Max’s original songs and the CD winds up in Goldilocks’ garden, with the bears, of course.

“Elegant, mystical, delicate tales told in imaginative ways. Every tune they spin turns to gold. Just gorgeous!” Wanda Adams Fischer, WAMC Hudson Valley Sampler DJ

”A magical, buoyant evening of delicious harmonies, thrilling fiddling, songs from the Celtic traditions and from each of the performers’ repertoires, accentuated by Jane Yolen’s elegant poetry.. Something for everyone in a delightful package.” Carol Allen, Music on Centre, Roxbury MA
