Album Notes
Janice was drawn to the piano from as early as she can remember, completely fascinated by the keyboard. At around the age of six, Janice began to play by ear the music she heard around her. From the age of 10 on, you could find her on the piano bench at church every Sunday, accompanying the worshipers at her tiny church. One of her favorite memories is of playing the piano in the living room, her mom and dad singing along.

A few years later her teacher discovered a unique gift: perfect pitch. Janice is able to identify individual notes and chords played on various instruments, as well as the key any particular piece of music is played in, just by listening to the music. As improvisation and playing by ear came so naturally to her, learning the intricacies of classical music was a challenge, but a challenge she loved.

In high school and college, she studied and performed the works of the masters: Chopin, Liszt, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Debussy. She studied piano at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts as well as the Interlochen Center for the Arts. In 1988, Janice received statewide recognition after winning the South Carolina Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition. She graduated with honor from the Wheaton College Conservatory, all the while playing in church nearly every Sunday, often performing her own compositions.

With a blend of God-given gifts, much training, and hours of practice, she developed a style all her own: the artistry of Classical music combined with the beauty of New Age piano, arrangements played with sensitivity and grace. Original melodies woven with old ones, new chords added to create something new out of something familiar.

Janice's first CD "Rest Assured - Hymns on Piano" was originally released several years ago, when her children were quite small. As she and her husband rocked them before bedtime at night, quiet music often was just what was needed to end a busy day with three little ones. "Rest Assured" began as a project of hymns played with these kinds of quiet moments in mind.

Janice quickly realized that children weren't the only ones who needed quiet, relaxing music. Many people requested more music and shared their stories about how this CD provided peace and comfort during difficult times.

Janice's family experienced this as her father bravely faced his battle with cancer. Music and scripture comforted them during dark days. Words to new songs and old hymns took on deeper meanings, and the music that was so reassuring during that difficult time continues to bring back memories of God's faithfulness and presence throughout that struggle.

Soon it became clear that this music had become a ministry of sorts, and that it was God's plan for Janice to continue.

Janice's newest CD, Measures of Grace, is also a project of her interpretations of great hymns, and includes her arrangement of the choral masterpiece, "The Majesty and Glory of Your Name," which sets to music the text of Psalm 8. Measures of Grace is summed up best by one of Janice's favorite passages of Scripture:

"I pray that out of his glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever. Amen."

"Measures of Grace" is the second collection of solo piano hymns arranged and performed by Janice Faber. Faber started playing the piano by ear at about six years of age, and went on to become her church’s pianist from about age ten on. Classically-trained, Faber graduated with honor from Wheaton College Conservatory. Half of the twelve tracks on this CD are medleys of two or three hymns and praise songs, for a total of nineteen songs. Faber adds some of her original music to the hymns as well as her interpretations of these timeless songs, creating a very soothing and personal album. Her arrangements have a classical sensibility with new age simplicity and directness - there isn’t a lot of flash in her playing, but none is necessary (or wanted!). Since Faber has been playing most of these songs for many years, they have become an intimate part of her life, allowing her to express much more than just familiar piano melodies. Whether or not you are familiar with these hymns, the music is gorgeous, heartfelt, and uplifting.

"Measures of Grace" begins with a beautiful and emotionally powerful arrangement of “It Is Well With My Soul.” Most of the left hand part has a lovely rubato flow that showcases the melodic right hand - an elegant and inviting beginning! “Be Thou My Vision” is a bit livelier and more joyous than I usually hear it, and I really like this arrangement! One of the highlights of the album is “The Majesty and Glory of Your Name,” a song I was not familiar with. Faber lets the melody sing with a flowing accompaniment, conveying deep, heartfelt emotions. The medley of “Take My Life and Let It Be” and “May the Mind of Christ My Savior” is a deeply-affecting pairing and another highlight. “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” has a warm and gentle energy that conveys joy and a strong sense of well-being. The combination of “I Need Thee Every Hour” and “Sweet Hour of Prayer” is also especially effective - very peaceful and thoughtful. “The Love of God” closes the album with a feeling of warm encouragement and reassurance. What an inspiring album!

"Measures of Grace" is gorgeous from start to finish, and I highly recommend it for the loveliness of the playing and the beauty of the music even more than for the fact that the music is hymns. Lovers of elegant solo piano will be delighted! If you are looking for a new collection of piano hymns, this is a must-have!Check it out!

This CD is soothing, relaxing and simply mezmorizing. And, at the same time, it is excitingly inspiring to priase God with such incredibly beauty. This music is sure to bless all who listen to it!

La pianista Janice Faber lanza Measures of Grace, la continuación de su primer álbum, Rest Assured. A diferencia de su CD de debut, Measures of Grace es un álbum centrado en descubrir para el oyente un número más amplio de himnos tradicionales y con una técnica más cuidada e interesante. Este último trabajo consiste en doce obras, seis de ellas medleys, por lo que podemos decir que realmente son un número más amplio de pistas (algunas de ellas mezcla de hasta tres himnos), la mayoría de estas obras, muy conocidas por todos. Faber muestra una entrega absoluta frente al piano, interpretando melodías que son entonadas con una intensidad increíble, lo que explica la importancia de Dios en la vida de la artista.

Uno de los himnos con los que siempre he disfrutado es "It Is Well with My Soul" y siempre es una delicia escuchar diferentes adaptaciones. Con pocas intervenciones de la mano izquierda, sólo para golpear acordes o repetir la melodía de la diestra, esta bella pieza se hace interesante, sobre todo al imaginar la técnica de Faber en plena interpretación.

"The Majesty and Glory of Your Name" es un apasionado himno escrito por Tom Fettke y Linda Lee Johnson al que Faber hace su particular cambio. Este tema llena de fervor al oyente gracias a su pasión y a unos minutos de emoción y energía que arranca la artista de su piano minutos antes de su conclusión. Qué fuerza!.

El primer medley del CD es "Give Me Jesus/I'd Rather Have Jesus". Una unión tan perfecta que prácticamente se hace imposible saber cuando concluye una pista y comienza la siguiente. Esta obra mantiene un carácter tierno, suave; las notas surgen con cariño desde lo más profundo.

"Take My Life and Let It Be/May the Mind of Christ My Savior" es una composición de himnos de lo más risueño y estimulante. Su melodía es radiante dentro de un estado tranquilo, sin sobresaltos. Me gusta!.

"Come, Thou Fount/There Is a Fountain" guarda emoción en su música. De melodía sencilla, a esta no le es necesaria acordes o notas imposibles para calar hondo en el oyente, la unión de sus notas crean una música hermosa. Realmente una maravilla.

"I Have Decided to Follow Jesus" es una simpática composición llena de inocencia. Arpegio de acordes y una melodía que se repite, irradian Fe. Pegadiza música!.

"Fairest Lord Jesus/Like a River Glorious" es otra entrañable obra, cuyas notas crean un fantástico baile que acaban en una música encantadora. Estos himnos invitan a cerrar los ojos y disfrutar de bellas y sinceras imágenes.

Uno de los temas más extensos del álbum está compuesto por tres himnos, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross/Jesus Paid It All/I Surrender All". Posiblemente la pieza más lineal en cuanto a cambios en la melodía, no muestra grandes sorpresas que llamen la atención del oyente, pero sí posee fragilidad y sentimiento.

"What a Friend We Have in Jesus" es una agradable pieza de mediados de 1800 al que sólo le falta la letra de la canción de Joseph Scriven. Esta versión no está modificada en exceso, manteniendo el pausado tempo y la dulce melodía.

El último medley de Measures of Grace es "I Need Thee Every Hour/Sweet Hour of Prayer" otra de las composiciones cariñosas y entrañables de este álbum. La unión de los dos himnos crea una sola melodía que transmite una fuerte sentimiento de armonía. Qué delicadeza!.

El final del álbum lo rubrica "The Love of God" una manera poderosa de concluir. La pieza comienza con un fluir pausado, tornándose fuerte en sentimiento al alcanzar su cenit. Nuevamente, Janice nos aporta vida gracias a una música llena de esperanza y hermosura. Otra de mis preferidas.

Measures of Grace es el álbum que dará a conocer a Janice Faber, una excepcional pianista formada en el seno de la música cristiana y que con Measures of Grace ha alcanzado lo más en belleza y fervor. No cabe duda que Measures of Grace es uno de los mejores álbumes de himnos eclesiásticos que se han revisado en Reviews New Age, una música ecléctica capaz de tocar al oyente y dejarlo sin habla.
